Hey guys! I have an installation of Windows Xp Professional on my computer, that was provided to me by the govt.(CYBERAGE SCHEME-GOA). Anyways, the copy is genuine and I want to know what I can do such that, if I were to get rid of XP, and later on re-install it, how would I be able to restore it to a genuine edition. I dont have ne sticker or the original disk. The comp came with XP pre-installed with no documentation, disk, nothing..........

Chanes are you may have one Volume Licance XP...

Download a Key finder program, *www.michaelstevenstech.com/zips/kf151.zip run it to view the key, write it down...

Now if you have a Retail / OEM XP u should have the sticker... but if its volume lisance, then there might be no sticker...

So, Looks to me Volume Licence... Now may use any available Pirated CD :p as those are usually Volume Licance Versions... so your key should work with it...

if the key doesnt work with the CD then u have one retail Windows XP.... then you may use any Retail Windows XP CD with your Key....

Now, Please ask your System Admin for the process, Microsoft has diffrent ToS with many GOV or Corporate customer, so just make sure u dont violate any !!!

Sorry for the late reply. just started col. So havent had much time. We're mass bunking tmrw so got time to get to digit tday!

Well, its a government scheme, called "the cyberage scheme", where they provide computers to the 12th standard students. Our computers are branded HP, but do nnot have ne sticked w.r.t the Microsoft sticker on ne part of the PC.

Once upon a time, I had retrieved the key and installed a volume Xp Prof, on another PC but, when I went to check genuineness, Microsoft said that there was some problem. Dont remember what .

I have a feeling that this license may be registered for the HP base sytem hardwasre config and for no other.

Well, there is no documentation w.r.t ne Microsoft product. I do however know what the serial key is of XP Prof installed on my system(using key finder). However, what I mean is how do I (not activate, cause that is easy) make my copy genuine if something were to happen to the OS. The OS is currently genuine. And so is the key

If you are reinstalling on the same computer (without much hardware changes), you can backup and restore activation info as per *www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/Wi.../Miscellaneous/BackupRestoreXPActivation.html

Yes u can... Any Windows XP Pro CD, Pirated, Genuine anything. U just need to install it and use the Key u found from that software and it will work.

The XP version u have installed is a volume license based.
Volume license based XP installation does not require an activation.
XP will never ask to be activated if it's volume license based.
To make u'r Windows genuine again, all u need to know is the Registered To like Name & Company name (if any) and the key that was pre-entered when u bought the PC.

U'll need the CD-key & registration info that was used to install XP. If u haven't formatted the Windows installation that came when u bought the PC, then note down the registration info from u'r PC. Not from the link I gave. It was only to tell u where the info is displayed.
Download the key finder program that Choto Cheeta gave. U'll the key from it. Use that key & the reg. info when u reinstall Windows XP.
But mind u, u'll need a volume license version of Windows XP setup disk to use that key. The key won't run on an OEM or retail version of Windows. And vice versa.
