guess this one now shud appear under this topic...b4 it goes on to reviews :D

Windows SteadyState (Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit) is the easy alternative to reformatng your PC. It can also be used to lock down the user interface and create various user profile. The softeware prevents permanent changes to the hard disk. SteadyState returns the computer and hard disk to its exact condition before the user touched it. Simply by rebooting!

it will help ur computer stay the way u want to.. no matter who all who use it !

windows steadystate is designed to specifically help pc administrators in schools, internet cafes, ets to keep their computers running smoothly in the state which it was originally in. it is now in the beta stage and is expected to b avlbl as a free download in early summer. since it prevents permanent changes to the hard disk, it returns the pc to the exact condition b4 the user touched it, simply by rebooting. when the comp restarts, all changes, inclu malware infections if any, deletion of system files accidenantally, etc are cleared, and the comp restored to its pristine condition.

it thus is an easy alternative to reformatting the pc. shud be a great help !

more on it later ... for now see here.

WOW! This is just great. If it works as advertised, it is going to be a lot of help to people who experiment a lot with their systems.

I have a doubt though, how is it launched? Do you have to boot into this SteadyState mode when you boot up or can it be started anytime from within the operating system? Also, is it necessary to reboot to clear the changes made while in SteadyState mode? Isn't there some setting for reverting from SteadyState without rebooting?

Suppose you tried out a software in SteadyState mode and it had no problems and you liked it, is there any way to commit the changes and have them affect the main operating system? Or will you have to reboot, discard the changes and reinstall the software?

If you like an application then you can simply make a new SteadyState with that application installed.

This actually reminds me of IBM Rapid Restore PC, just without the backup partition part.

How different is it from other drive image tools like acronis ?
in the fact that SteadyState is automatic and will revert changes with a simple reboot .

in cas eof drive imaging , u'll have to make image urself , burn it to disk or something , then boot from ur cd n restore everythin . a lott cumbersome than steadystate :)

I see right through you.
This will be very good especially for public computers with lots of people coming and going and leaving traces behind. And, of course, for people who tinker with their system a lot.
