I have an original windows 2000. I stopped using it as I used to get strange pop up messages when connected to the internet. Then I changed to XP. Now I am buying a new PC for research etc that doesnt need heavy duty stuff like graphics card etc. My questions are

1. Why do these pop ups etc appear..are these security problems? If so, will putting SP4 help?

2. Where will I find SP1 to SP4 for W2K. Has digit given it anytime?

Thanks

Scan ur pc for adware & spyware to remove pop-ups.

And here is the patch for Windows2K-> *www.microsoft.com/windows2000/down...ws2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/sp4Eng.mspx

Also install AV,it is must.
Try Avast Freeware Home Edition.

The popups appeared as a result of spyware/adware/malware... When you get the new PC, after installing Win 2k, install SP4 (no need to install SP1 to SP3 because all those patches are included in SP4). Then, get latest full AutoPatcher for Win2k and install it. This will get you patched up as much as possible as far as Windows is considered.

After this, you need to install a series of software for your PC security. These include Antivirus (Avast is very good), Firewall (Zone Alarm Personal is very good) and Anti-spyware (Adaware and Spybot S&D are both good and I recommend that you use both).

Finally, you need to make sure that you use your PC judiciously. This is especially necessary for the programs that you install and the sites that you visit... When you browse, try alternative browsers such as Opera and Firefox instead of IE, as they are less likely to be targeted by malware... When you download and install programs, try to get them from wellknown sources... Try to avoid piracy because often cracks, etc hide malware... Freeware for most needs are available... If you want to try new software, try to read reviews in recognised sites such as zdnet.com, etc for any info on included spyware, etc...

2. Digit and/or other mags gave SP4 long back... Not sure when because they were issued many years ago and will be hard to get... It will be easier to download it off the net now... If you have dial-up, try to get someone with bband to get it for you if possible...
