i wanted to know if windows xp home edition can take advantage of dual core cpus....i heard somewhere that computers running with sp2 show decreased performance with dual core cpus....is that true ????

nope Win XP can very well handle dual core and it has been designed from the beginning to handle multiple cores n multithreaded applications , there's no way it will show degraded performance on a dual core CPU .

also , Service Pack 2 does install some extra applications n components but it has no effect on speed .

Actually WinXP Home can NOT handle Symmetric Multi Processing. I do not if its kernel sees a dual core processing as SMP in which case, no Home will not be of any use.

@zeeshan but microsoft irself says that win xp with sp2 might show degraded performance on dual core processors.....check out the link i provided in my first message...

ok you are all confused. what MS says is the processors which support power managements features (like speedstep, powernow etc).. ie ondemand clock modulation (which changes speed according to the load) may case decreased performance. since it is built in all newer generation cpus hence it mite affect it too. its not exclusively related to core2duo. so go ahead widout any worries! :)

well if u read correctly they said that the prob happens in the 64 bit version of Server 2003 and XP

and as far as i can guess u'll be using the 32 bit version of XP
