I'm going to buy a writer too. I don't think there is service center for Liteon at my place. Do you think I should I go for Liteon or will Sony be better?

now any sata dvd writers availbl in India market :? heard ide pata is replaced all over by scsi/sata :? update pls

It has been there with online retailers for quite some time. For eg. see the link below. (Sony Rs.1.9K)
My next one will also be SATA but my DRU810A is still working perfectly after 2 years.

Sony sata writers are available here. Its 18X, but Liteon is 20x.

One big point is dat, the greatest writing quality is for BenQ and Plextor. Just check some reviews or shootouts nd ull find it. That is discs burned on these drives has the widest supports on older drives, DVD players etc.

But perfomancewise Liteon is ahead of Benq. Quality is somewhat same. Plextor is too expensive.

afaik world over hdds etc are moving from ide pata to scsi or sata(forgive me for my limited knowledge) and cd/DVD drives are also an extension of the same transition to sata.my next purchase of a dvd drive be sata and hdd may be esata or perpendicular drive (affordable if at all) 8)

Drives with Perpendicular recording should be in the same price range as previous ones. Only you have to make sure the disk is PMR
(*en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpendicular_recording)

For eg. in case of Seagate, 7200.10 or 7200.11 series.
