Hello, everyone! This is my very 1st post here. I want some advice regarding IT degrees. I have currently finished my 12th board exams (Commerce) & am thinking of going ahead in IT, computers being my strong interest right from childhood.

But one important thing is that something like distance learning is my only option (due to physical constraints). Going to the college/univ only for exams is just manageable, so going there everyday is simply not possible.

Studying at home has never been a problem. God has gifted me with a very sharp brain & have never needed tuitions/classes. And in XIIth too, 85%+ marks is a huge possibility. In school & college too, my attendance used to remain very low.

So, considering all the factors, which are the best IT degrees / diplomas that I can pursue? Also, will it be possible to work from home for a company after getting that degree?

Thanks in advance,

Viral :)

Dear Viral1991,

There are huge number of universities offering distance education but I think you can learn Bachelors in Computer Application and then the Masters. Regarding the job opportunities you need to come out of your home else I don't think many big MNC's would prefer you. Nevertheless even this thinkdigit hires people who can work from home.
I am unaware about your physical constraints but then I am ready to help you if you need anything.

Yes, I have heard about BCA & MCA. Btw, how is B.Sc (IT) as an IT degree?
Working from home is important, mobility being a major factor. So, if a degree facilitates it, then it would be best.

Honestly any Bachelors degree [am not talking about professional courses like B.E or B.Tech] is not enough for a good career. You have to do master degree. B.C.A or B.Sc IT are almost same.

Regarding job offers, I am not sure how many companies are providing work from home facility. Even if it provides, it would be 2 days per week. This is because you have to talk with your clients, team members, you have to attend many meetings all this can happen only if you come to office.

What I would suggest is first complete your bachelors and masters degree, preferably in a regular college. Keep on update your skill sets. Jobs will knock your door.

All the best.

Yes, I will go for a Masters if I do pursue IT.

I know that working from home can be a dis-advantage. But, that cannot be changed currently. Also, your post's last 3 sentences are very good. :)

Well, dont just think which degree will get you a better status.... Jobs are not offered according to degrees, but your knowledge is what going to determine where you stand.....

At my time, everybody was advising me like , join doeacc, its a good course, join BCA, its better recognized and all that stuff..... What i did was grabbed the syllabus for those courses and joined what i liked the most -- BCA, mainly due to programming.

You said that you are going to study from your home..... Dont bother much abt that as IT field still got some great opportunities for you, some even better done at home....
But there is a problem... The correspondence courses are not good..... Even if you are willing to work hard, nobody will care... There are a lot of unfair means being practiced in correspondence courses which are hurting its value... Companies prefer regular students over correspondence ones..... The fact is, people do correspondence courses just to get a mark of graduate on their forehead and they do whatever they can do to pass in th exams except studying....

You can do one more thing, join some good university for regular course and contact the authorities to grant you permission to study@ home giving them a valid reason. The attendence is in the hands of the college and one good application can do the magic. This will be the best solution for you according to me as i dont want a talent like you to get in the middle of dumb correspondence kids....

Internet has got vast opportunities for home developers, either full time or part time. You have done 12th you should already be toiling those. Let me know your skills and i might have some work for you... I am hiring for my websites..... If you are still learning, then i can suggest you some things and places on the net to visit where you can learn and earn on your own... But remember, you have to practice those apart from university syllabus....

Yet another option can be you get into web design/development as a freelancer. As you mentioned computers are where your interest lies, i think it can be a very satisfying career option working from home.

Web is expanding, and with sound knowledge [you don't have to be a rockstar coder/designer] you will never fall short of work/clients & can have a steady income equivalent to other people working in IT companies.

I can tell because i am a full time freelancer, working from home.

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone! Now, we have decided that I won't pursue an IT degree. By God's grace, I already have a lot of knowledge on Computers. Thus, I am going to pursue a specialist degree course (Actuarial Sciences) & will continue with computers as a hobby. So, basically, my main degree will be Actuary while I will continue learning about Computers as a hobby.

Thanks again! :)
