What is partition?

Hi friends, i have been scratching my head for quite some time over this. Can some one explain to me what is creating partition in windows and what is its use? please explain to me in layman's term.

Suppose u have a 5000 sq feet house. You can divide it into as many parts as required using walls. Here each separate part is called a partition.
In the same way you can divide your single large hard disk(say 1TB)into some parts as required..
