Design and egronomics-
At a glance the w890 looks real good through all angles...the feel is very solid, and there are no sharp edges throughout. The body sports a metal finish thus and looks really great. The body is not too prone to fingerprints..but the metal casing has a tendency of getting scatched easily if not used carefully..however, the unit i had in hand was a black one and thus the scratches or anything were not too visible. The buttons are well placed and well protruted, such that my 6'2 hands did not have any problem in dialing or typing a message..yes..i had some initial hiccups owing to the small size of the phone but in my case..i guess only the XPERIA can solve the problem. The thing ,as avertized is exactly 10 mm thick..easily slips between my fingers..the thickness has in no way affected the build quality, and the phone as a whole packs a punch in terms of egronomics and functionalities.the phone is availablee in 3 colors-silver,mocha and black.
Display-
The 2 inch display on the W890 is simply a treat to watch...at par with the best in SE..and maybe a bit paler than my k850 the display packs a punch..readability in direct sunlight is an issue though..howevr my friend not opening the screen cover yet may have something to do with it...the screen can accomodate 262k colors and ha a resolution of 320x240..
However the screen is very compact and according to SE, has been made of some flint plastic material which is resistive to scratches
Menu-
to peaple who have had a taste of the A200 platform will find nothing new in the way the thing has been set up..fast,intuitive and beautiful to the eye..The Menu speaks for itself.
There are a few flash themes that have been incorporated into the device..namely bronzy, laser and chocky..the themes are great and when the DB3150 framework will be cracked into, expect more flash themes. the device comes built with flash lite 2 and will have an upgrade to flash lite 3 in the coming firmwares.
Camera-
Well, the W890 comes packed with a 3.2 mp non A/F cam..the camera quality is commendable with awesome color reproduction under direct sunlight..but fails to prove a point when used under low ligh conditions, owing to the lack of flash. But in my opinion, way better than any Nokia phone out there..except maybe the N73..pics form the phone will be posted shortly...
the phone shoots videos at QVGA 30 fps and looks quite smart on the screen
the camera menu has many in-built scenes and also supports the the panorama, burst and landscape mode for shooting pics.Effects such as sepia, black and white are also present.
I SE WALKMAN-
well..coming down to the walkman player, its the same as used in the w910, and its basically a rolled up version of the 0ne we se in all A200 phones such as the k850,etc.The walkman 3 player sports a psp style menu(without the accelerometer in this occasion) and can be used in the portrait or landscape mode according to th convinience of the user. The media library lists the songs as artists, albums, etc automatically and one can also prepare playlists of your favourite songs..theres also the audipbook feature where you can sort in audiobooks..the player itself is very good looking, with awesome visualizations,a 5 band equalizer with mega bass, stereo widening, etc.
Audio quality and video playback-
Now we come to the main part.the sound quality of the sony walkmans have come under the scanner recently due to lack of audio chips in their devices.Well...thanx to my friends..i have access to many expressmusic phones with whch to compare the latest variant of the walkman series..
This version of the walkman ,trust me, has a much better audio quality than walkmans of the previous era..the mids and lows and highs are simply perfect...but the mids could have been better...(mom tested too..she is a state level singer )
video playback is also quite good but when encoded at high fps ,the audio and video gets out of sync..but still a first release firmware, will hopefuly get sorted out in th next firmware
Songs as tested with-
Poets of the fall(signs of life)-LIFT
taare zameen pe-MAA
Race-Chika CHika
phil collins-Anther day in paradise
John Denver-annie's song
Well...the W890 simply blows away the competiotion with the first song...MEGA BASS on and it blows away any phone when it comes to reproducing accurate lows..i personally like walkman phones for this feature coz i myself am a huge hard rock fan.
the next song however was a close one.i listened and listened..but couldnt really come out with a clear winner...bt the nokia managed the mids quite well, better in fact , while the W890 came on top with the highs and lows
Race-again a sweep by the W890..the nokia phones fail to provide that oomph factor to the song, making it sound more mushy unlike that of the walkman
The next two songs however were too close to call and so i dont want to risk it..
well-as i say guys..u hear and decide..i personally like how the walkman sounds, better than the nokia ones
Connectivity-
the w890 comes with the best in line connectivity with edge,gprs,3g and hspda..futureproof in india as i must say
final words:-
great phone and a must buy for any audio and fahsion fanatic..i am hopfully getting one next week or a week after that
sorry guys..a bit busy with AIEEE this week..will give you an indepth review next week with loads of pictures ..thanx..in the meantime..feel free to ask me anything
