Am not able to shutdown ubuntu properly. Whenever i click the power button, nothing happens, the screen just freezes and stays like that. I tried various methods posted on ubuntu forum, but still it is not working.

Another query i would like to post is that, since yesterday the network icon on the panel is displaying no network (there is an exclamation mark between the two computers). But i am facing no network problems. Infact i am posting this from my ubuntu installation. Why is that so?

1) Just press Ctrl + Alt + F1 key. Login to your account in text mode and use the command: shutdown

You'll get to know what the error message is.

2) I think it is set to show the wrong network device. Just check in prefs its showing the status of you correct network device.

I guess i fixed the problem myself :)

A colleague had send me *yoten.blogspot.com/2007/04/speed-up-ubuntu.html It contained several so-called tips to speed up ubuntu. I had tried those, and as a result everything got screwed up. Now i undid all those changes and its working fine for me.

@infra_red_dude Thanks for replying though :)
