Trouble with modem.

Okay a friend of mine has this modem(given by BSNL),and a weird problem is cropping up. there are 4 led's on it,and the "PC/USB" led glows during startup but as soon as the logon screen(win xp) appears the "PC/USB" led turns off.
He can't connect to the internet(obviously). Any ideas on what the problem might be? :\

Help needed ASAP

is the USB modem driver installed?
also, goto device manager and check whether the device is enabled or is having any issues. and check if any other USB device is working for that port.

if you ain't connecting through USB, then goto control panel->network connection(in case of XP)
or control panel->network status->adapter settings(in case of win7)
check if the "local area network" adapter is enabled.

It is a usb modem I guess. And yeah LAN adapter is enabled.

If it is a usb modem, then it will work as dial-up modem. Install the latest driver of the modem, and enter the provided IP in that dial-up connection & you are ready to go.
