A graphics tablet

I want a graphics tablet for some casual sketching. Discovered that Wacom is the best one but their products are a real pain in the back (price wise). Amazingly I found out a really cool thing from wacom- the Wacom Graphire3 pen EP-130E-0S-01 available at e-bay and theitdepot

it costs around 900 bucks. I wanna know is that "will it really work" (it boast of pressure sensitive tip etc). so can I use it on a normal surface.
some more info will be helpful. Why are the other ones so costly (>5000)? Is the pad so costly?
