just make a new dam already...i don't know y tamil nadu is concerned...safety trumps above everything...but i also heard that SC had given nod to extensive repair work of the dam...so not sure where to stand here...if tamil nadu is concerned that they will get less water share,then address this immediately...kerala's demand is quite legit..

One question:When the dam was built, at that time itself it was indicated that the life of the dam would be 50 years. So when the 999 years lease was signed, wasnt there any clause in it for reconstructing/maintaining the dam?

One possible sol: Kerela govt should divert the water upstream to some other place (may be sea) and not allow any water to go into the catchment area

Thats worse..thats what tamil nadu is afraid of...that kerala will take away its water share...hence the resistance...this will further dampen the relations between the two...

OK, Assume the DAM collapsed and leave all those poor lives RIP - including me; but

1. What will happen if it shook the Undersea cables landed @ Cochin ? Where will all IP and Telephony packets from the whole south India including Bangalore will go ? Complete Blackout ???
2. What will happen if it spills the huge oil tanks through the port line of Cochin ? Oil wont flow beyond the bounds of Kerala's coastal line ???
3. When will the people from rest of Kerala able to lit an electric bulb as the down stream will ruin the major source and network of electricity ?

Check dam across Vaigai river collapses following flood - NewsReporter.in

Madurai,Tamilnadu Nov 30 : A check dam constructed across the Vaigai river at a cost of Rs 14 crore at Nandhi Valasai village in Ramanathapuram district collapsed following flood fury yesterday,officials said.

Revenue officials who inspected the site, said construction of the check dam began nine months ago with the objective of augmenting drinking water supply, groundwter level and feeding water for 52 small irrigation tanks.

this dam was build by the same engineers who claims that the 116 years old mullaiperiyar dam is strong

There is a temporary solution however.The water level in the Idukki dam may be reduced and can be used to contain a portion of the water from Mullaperiyar dam in case a failure occurs.This is being done.But doing so will only reduce the amount of damage caused.

Yea, when broken, 3 districts will be under water. My neighbor district will be under water soon, if the Dam is broken.
If two gvrnmnts agreed for a new dam, imagine the time that take for building a Big dam..!
Here in Kerala, building a bridge of 400 or 500 METER after all those Fuing political issues, is taking 4 to 5 years. So how a DAM in these days.?
