Hello Guys,

I am having a Notebook of HP Pavilion model no-DV1624TN. Laptop have a 80 GB HDD of Hitachi Travelstar, 1.5 GB RAM, 1.6GHz (T1300) Intel Core Solo Processor (Centrino Technology) and WiFi a,b,g and all other basic features which comes with nowadays laptop.

Few days back, My HDD got some problem and I couldn't install Operating System. When I'm going to format the Drive, it says HDD couldn't be formatted, possibly hard drive got damaged and contact your manufacturer. I tried a lot but same error comes up every time. Moreover, there's a little sound I can hear which comes from Hard drive only as I checked by removing the hard drive from my laptop and after switching on the sound I couldn't heard. So, it is from Hard Drive only.

I bought the laptop before 3 yrs ago. My Hard Drive is Hitachi TravelStar 80 GB, SATA Interface, 5400 RPM (Model No-HTS541080G9SA00 Serial No-X6KTKS5M Part No-412366-001). Now the issue is I need to buy a new Hard Drive but I'm confused with Interfaces and Brands. I can install any brand of Hard Drive or I need to go for only Hitachi Travelstar model ??? The Internal Hard Drive which comes in all of the laptops having same standard SATA Interface or it will be different in every laptops ??? I'm really confused with this issue. Please help me guys.

Presently I'm in UK and I bought the laptop from India. I've checked over the Internet by searching the same model number of my Hard Drive but I found very few one. The only thing is if I'm gonna order SATA Interface, 80 GB, 5400 RPM, will that be enough...I mean will that Hard Drive works on my laptop ??? What things I need to consider when buying Hard Drive ???

Please guys, if anyone knows about this issue, help me. I really really will be thankful to you guys. I hope you guys will help me.

Thanks in Advance.

1. You can buy any brand/any model but SATA, need not be Hitachi (of course, Hitachi is a good brand).

2. You can go for a higher capacity HDD, why settle for 80 GB ? Just check how much (max) HDD size your laptop support, I think you can go for even 250 GB and price won't be mcgh higher.

Are you sure it is damaged ? Tested in thoroughly ?

I changed my HDD (Hitachi 40 GB) in my IBM Thinkpad and upgraded (200 GB western digital) and it is working fine. I bought a metal case for the old 40 GB ans using it as a portable drive as well ;)

Many Many thank "Din" as you replied me well.

You are absoulately right to go for higher capacity. I've tried the 160 GB in my Laptop, Hitachi one and which is working perfectly fine and allright.

Now, I'm planning to buy Western Digital 320 GB Scorpio Blue Edition, SATA, 5400 RPM and which also gives me 3 Years warranty. Will this one support my Laptop and works fine ???

How can we know that till how much maximum capacity of HDD we can install in our laptop? My HP Pavilion dv1624tn has Intel 945 GM Express Chipset Motherboard. I think HDD things all depends on motherboard, rite !!! I've searched on Intel's website but nowhere I found the information regarding HDD. You might be knowing, about how can we know regarding Internal laptop HDD.

Presently I'm in UK and I want the HDD desperately and very soon. Please solve my problem so I can order the Western Digital 320 GB HDD. I will be very thankful and greatful to you. I've also posted query regarding this HDD in Q&A and Hardware Troubleshooting section. Can you please reply me soon when you get this message including all the information.

Thanks in Advance.
