Hmmm... get a MFD instead. An HP one should do just fine. But then if a standalone scanner is all that you want then HP and Canon are the best.

I use UMAX Astra 2500. Its works just about ok. It was purchased quite some time back for about 2.5 to 3K. I occassionally scan pics and most of the time use it for OCR.

There must be some other entry level model now.

Haven't checked with my dealer for quite some time, but if the Microtek 3800 is still available, it's a good entry-level scanner.

I like the very fast preview, and colour and greyscale reproduction is good. It has a slight bluish tinge, but such minor imperfections are often present even in much more expensive models, and can be easily corrected. Got it for 3.4k two years ago IIRC.
