I am a Electronics and Engineering 4th year student.TCS is the only company that come for campus recruitment and i was rejected in the Interview round. :-( Now it seems that off campus placement is the only opportunity for me. I dont know where to concentrate. Should i go for EIE core companies or software companies??? I personally have no preference at all (i love both programming as well as electronics stuffs). Now what i want is a good salary, good growth and a balance between life and work.....
Also guys please advice

Hi,
You say you like both programming and electronics.. But you need to conc on one of them and prepare hard, if you are going for offcampus...Offcampus interviews are generally a tougher nut to crack (not trying to scare you) and you need to be an expert in one of these areas..

During the 4 years of engg, you would have had some IT papers (C, C++, Java etc).. Did you do well in them and were you interested in hard core
programming?? If yes, then you can take a look at IT...Also, you should think on why you got rejected in TCS interview and improve yourself in those areas..

In case you found yourself drawn towards hardcore engineering papers and did well in that area, then you should seriously look for a career in the same.. In the
long run a job in core field might be more rewarding and fulfilling (ofcourse you need to excel in it).. Most of the guys from core background become dis-satisfied with the programming work and look for Mba or something else to get out of it in a couple of years..

And regarding good salary, good growth and balance of life and work...it will come in whichever job you do, provided you put your heart and soul in it..

Decide what you want to do first and the rest will follow.. Atb..

P.S - You can also look at other options like Mtech, Mba, Govt jobs etc..Campus placement isnt the end..

BMG ftw!!
Rejected in interview? ok..
If I were you I won't bother to look into core companies, look for off campus interview in software companies, but don't expect much unless you are very lucky.

Think well before joing IT service companies. There isn't much of challenge in there. So ultimately its your choice.

During my course i visited power plants..... where is the challenge there??? All they do is sit before the computer..... take down readings in a log book.....thats all.....is there is any problem thet send the technicians under them to the site...... and check the readings again in the computer...thats all.......there is no space for creativity and analytical thinking..............

Humble advice avoid IT companies especially service based [CTS, TCS, Infosys etc..] cause fear of losing job makes u sick and restless.

If u really want to join in IT go for product based companies like HP[software], Amazon, Verizon, Thomson reuters etc.

I'm a ECE student who is suffering in IT :( cause of poor percentage I end up here. But I love what I do with fear

^ advantage is that they train people and let them work, in that way non IT people are more into IT

Ask the man who owns one!
It's a lot lot better to go for IT companies rather than the electronics field.. Try to catch up the vacancies in HCL, Wipro or nay other IT company and I hope you will be able to get the interview scheduled pretty soon.

Salary wise don't worry, almost all engineering jobs are based on same range. I would suggest you to go for embedded programming.

It's upto you to decide. If you are so interested in Programming, choose IT, otherwise, if you want to try in your field, go on and try. Don't become just another guy, who ended up in IT, because he didn't get a good job in his field.

Even a student from a very good college can only dream of getting into such good organizations.. i think it would be wiser to have more realistic goals.

I'm not sure what you mean by disgusting , these company do recruit absurd amount of graduates, most of whom are possibly underskilled, but someone who has the potential to make it big utilises the training here to the fullest to reach his goal, which is mostly a good company he wishes to get it in future.

Again, you have to see that the no. of opportunities in ECE is only a fraction compared to the IT sector. Core jobs are very less in number and they recruit top students. Not all ECE students get a core job , most end up in the IT sector. I'm not saying you shouldn;t pursue ECE , i just want you to know what you might face down this road.

coming from a very good college or having 9+GPA does not indicate ones programming capabilities , cause i have seen some 8-9 pointer students who cant even formulate algorithms beyond the text book problems taught

In service based one if you have good score(75% + academics) + good ENGLISH speaking skills you will be selected nothing about programming skills(basic questions will be asked if asked at all. So keep your basics clear.)

most product based companies does not work that way, most of the time you will end up in front of a PC/ white board with a problem set with a finite time if you succeed in solve those problems + you have to explain how you choose the algorithm(s) & why you chose them you will be selected.
If you join a product based company initial exposure will be big & rewarding same cannot be said about service based one.

So choose wisely

& in offcampus process will be tougher as you will have so many people coming for less no of jobs. Don't be scared. prepare math+logical reasoning( to crack the written) & little bit english(to crack the interview).
One more thing as you are from electronics you may have to face electronics subject related questions, because there are many electronics background students working in the service industry

as gopi_vbboy said if you like to be challenged then joining a service based company is not a good idea

I never said you have to be a top student to be eligible for the above mentioned companies, my point was, these organizations conduct placements in very few colleges, and even fewer off campus pool placements, so it is very hard to get in.

Most of the companies are service based , even the best of software companies choose smart people over scholars so that they blend in smoothly in the office, so knowledge of english and a good notion of the basics are essential for all placement interviews, service or product based//
