Need help with getting faster transfer speed using ftp software, I downloaded ws_ftp & am using a so called airtel broadband connection 256 Kbps.

The site I upload is on a fast linux server using 4 CPU and 2 GB RAM on server. I hope its fast.

On uploading I get a transfer speed of 1.2-1.8 KBps rarely it goes above 3KBps. (ws_ftp reports that)
Mostly I am uploading a directory which has further sub directories upto 8 levels.

On a 256 connection I guess this speed is toooo slow., it took me over 2 hrs to upload 10.2mb data yesteday.

Is it some setting which I need to make in order to get fast ftp speeds.
Need help.

Well, uploading speed on 256kbps connection inbest condition would be 10kbps only. It can vary as per ISPs.

And when you are uploading a directory, it takes more time as each directory has to be created seperately.

Check with other users in same locality and try uploading single files.

I just checked the speed at
*www.dslreports.com/stest

It showed

Upload speed was at 102 Kbps
Download speed was 194 Kbps

I tried another ftp using fire ftp within firefox , no improvement.

I have to host over 80mb of data & I need suggestion how to I get this going faster.

Generally if you are on 256kbps connection, upload speed should be around 25KBps+ but in your case it seems that upload speed is capped by the firewall or your ISP...

Firewall off but no difference, but I dont understand why & how will firewall slow the speed.
I tried it from my laptop too & its the same speed, so either its airtel or my server is very slow, its not ftp for sure.

ISP is Airtel broadband.
Any more clues?

Aah ignore the firewall part - Machine lever firewalls cant slowdown upload speeds i guess..I mentioned abotu server side firewall - just ignore it...

Actually in your case it looks more like ISP limiting the speed...

what you can do is...you can test the speed in some other machine with diff user id...i.e. some friend using same airtel connection

so this way you will be able to trace out the problem...
