Simmtronics which is better known for its inexpensive memory modules, has decided to venture into the netbook segment with the announcement of the company's first netbook, based on Intel's Atom mobile CPU. This netbook will be available in the Indian market this year.

The company plans to start its production at its Roorkee factory as the volume increases. The new compact and lightweight netbook will be similar to other netbooks, as it sports a 10.2-inch screen, comes with Intel Atom processor N270 at 1.6 GHz core speed and 1 GB of RAM.

Vinit Shangle, National Sales Manager, Simmtronics Semiconductors, said, "We have kept our distribution and marketing plans at a low-profile owing to ongoing economic slowdown and increasing numbers of delayed payments and defaulter cases. At present, we do not wish to invest in branding and marketing promotions. Nevertheless, whenever the market corrects, we will launch a full-fledged range of netbooks, in partnership with Intel. We expect to sell 400 units of netbooks by end of December".

At present, the Simmtronics netbook will be available in three colors - red, black and white.

Priced at Rs. 21,999 plus taxes and with a back to bench one-year warranty, the netbook will be made available by 15 December this year.

Not impressive at all, especially if you consider the fact that a Lenovo laptop (not a nettop) with a 2.0GHz celeron is available for 19K and the CPU is twice as powerful.
