Sata or Pata ...... What is this.

What is the difference between SATA and PATA . What are the 2 meanings.

If I were to buy a HDD which one would be better.

What is the approx price of both if they are available in Seagate fo 40 GB and 80 GB .

Just Do It
1) SATA is the future standard. PATA is on it's slow death. It's like saying, "I'm going to buy a new car."

2)

a. Seagate - Cheaply made, but getting much better. Seagate now has the fewest failures of all the drives made now.

b. Quantum - Has had a bad batch of drives with a defective chip incl. the Fireballâ„¢ CX,LA,LB,LC and KX series.

c.Samsung - (Inexpensive, you get what you pay for!) Cheaply made, consumer use only but do a religious backup!

3) Chaech with any dealers there [ price]

If you're building a new system, I'd recommend SATA as the smaller cables look neater and help air circulation. Most new motherboards have onboard SATA raid controllers, which is good if you'd like to experiment with raid arrays.

There's a price difference of around INR 400 (2800 vs 3200) between 80gb PATA and SATA, SATA being the more expensive option.

hmm the data transfer rates are 1.5 gbps for a sata and if i`m not wrong 133 mbps for a pata....
and ya smaller neater cables for sata as compared to pata cables..

go for SATA (serial ata) only if ur MOBO supports it . It's better and faster. Also, dont forget to buy the power adaptor cables for SATA drives. If u have no mobo support, stick with PATA ( parallel ata) always look for 7200 rpm drives as they are faster than 5400 rpm counterparts. The price difference of SATA and PATA is Rs. 150 in Mumbai.( SATA costs more)

never heard of Hypertransport memory(Heard Hyper Threading in case of intel)..maybe others can clear this doubt..

yes and i personally think.. ur RAM,HDD is less and yeah Graphics Card(if u like gaming)

even if for that u have to search a lil more ..

i dont understand why the hell HP are promoting compaq in india..even telephonic tech support for compaq PC's have dropped in US..

It's an OK config for an average user. ADD more RAM, a DVDRW, A decent Graphic card, and u are at it. Also consider upgrading ur HDD.

Not a too bad config, for the buck u r spending.

Can anyone tell me what exactly is the meaning of 1.5 GBPS in case of SATA. I have a 200Gb Segate SATA HDD and Im a bit confused about it.

1.5GBPS is transfer rate and 200Gb is the capacity... say you have a 5000lts water tank but the pipe to fill/empty it is 1lts/sec.

GBPS stands for GB per second

What i meant was that i can never see a transfer speed of 1.5 GBPS...
Anc could you exactly tell me how do you check if the speed is 1.5 GBps.

wrong there it stands for Gbits per second.

here is a comparison between sata and pata , hope it helps.

:arrow: SATA has transfer rate of 1.5Gbits/sec or 150 Mbytes/sec whereas PATA has a trans rate of upto 133 mbytes/sec. SATA 2 has trans rates upto 300 Mbytes/sec.

:arrow: In SATA there is no master/slave , it is point to point whereas PATA has tiny jumpers.

:arrow: SATA has upto 39 inch (1 meter) cables and PATA has 18 inch cables.

:arrow: SATA has thin cables (1/4inch) PATA has 2 inch wide ribbon cables.

:arrow: SATA has blade and beam connectors (snap in) and PATA has 40 pin and socket.

:arrow: SATA has 0.5 inch wide data connector and PATA has 2 inch wide data connectors.

:arrow: SATA has intelligent data handling ( by Native Command Queuing) and PATA has limited (legacy command queuing)

dear when we say ATA100/133 then those are ideal speeds... you never reach them but they give you the idea or speeds... say reaching 50% of that too is a good going (considering random seek and write operations)

i think (no sure) you can check your drive speeds and many many other system parameters with sisoft sandra and compare them with their precombined database of other combinations

Whew !! Thanks a lot.. That sure did clear lot of my doubts.
And just for the record i have a 200GB SATA HDD and guess what.... Im goin for another one.... 400 GB in all.... Now thats a lot of space...
