Guys,

I have a simple question. I am gonna buy a new hdd this weekend. Should I go for SATA or IDE? What is the performance difference between both? I can see that price difference between both types is very small.

Also I have heard that connecting SATA harddisk is different than IDE one.

Please help!

Regards,
Amit Kale.

Depends on factors like ur mobo having sata ports or not,ur budget, backward system compatibility[if u are gonna roam about with ur hdd in hand to collect data from friends having older pc's then u r in aa situation.I've faced such situations.]But u can always convert it to portable if thats what u need. But if ur sys supports it and u aint gonna use it for data transfer then go for SATA,No PATA.

obviously go for sata. ide is out now, sata is the latest. compatability wouldn't be a prob unless u have a very old mobo

SATA is d way 2 go.

even if ur mobo does not support SATA natively u can buy a PCI-base SATA card dat will enable u 2 attach SATA hdd 2 ur mobo. IC CHIP has a small piece on this card in their June ed

@Slugger.
Whats the point in getting a SATA disk on a pc with PCI SATA CARD?
PCI architecture doesnot have DATA bandwidth comparable to onboard sata controller. In PCI the speed is limited to 133mbps.so no point in running it off a addon sata controller. Its useful only in emergencies.

Thanks for all the replies! I am gonna build a new pc with core 2 duo processor. Obviously the motherboard would be compatible to this processor.

Now suggest me if I should go for SATA or IDE?

How SATA is connected to motherboard? Is there any cable like ide hdd has or by some other way?

Thanks and Regards,
Amit Kale.

if u're assembling a new pc, it would be absolutely foolish to go for ide. its on its way to extinction and only those people use it who are forced to. u're assembling a new pc, ur mobo will 100% support sata, so defenitely go for sata

the original post had not mentionde if he was going 2 assemble a new rig or going 4 an upgrade. i had assumed dat d guy was going 4 and upgrade since all d other posts had adivsed him to go 4 sata which wud not be possible 4 him 2 do if he had an old mobo not supporting SATA nativley
also buying a SATA hdd now even if his mobo did not support it natively wud mena dat he cud continue using d same hdd, if the guy decided 2 go in 4 a magor upgrade [dat included chanign d mobo]

u shud get one 4 around 1000 (+-100-200), take one with at least 2 ports [they may try 2 sell u one having only one port 4 d same price], although u could also get one with 4 ports 4 around d same price
