Good advice, OP should definitely go for this. Much better choice over the Galaxy Y, Galaxy 3 and low quality Huewei (watever is name). But doesn't cheap HTC phones tend to lag sometimes?

Also, OP should check if HTC service in available in his area as its pretty scarce here in Punjab ( Only in Ludhiana).

Theoretically, Explorer should be better at battery life.

I don't think that Explorer battery like would be better than your nokia as android sucks the battery like anything.
But yes you can expect a decent battery back up from it

In local shop you will be getting Explorer for 9-10k
Get it from ebay and use the 10% coupon to take the price down to ~7800Rs.
Now the answer to your questions:
1. Explorer is the best option you have.
2. You can't compare any Android phone with any Symbian(or an crappy OS) phone
3. It may be the case in small cities, now HTC is very popular and almost every local dealer know about it.

only 2 are there: LG Optimus Net else HTC Explorer. Both their own strength and weaknesses. a google search will reveal more.

Avoid all other mobiles. No Fit, No mini, no Acer, Sony Ericsson or anything like that.

At your budget, you'll get only 1 proper Nokia mobile. Nokia 500 but will regret if you buy it. Explorer as well as Net is miles ahead.

Don't really want to poke my nose here, but as an "urgent" need has emerged (I threw my cellphone on the wall facing me ) I guess I will have to buy off a new phone.

I have been thinking lately to get a Vodafone 858 Smart (a rebranded Huawei U8160) available at ~5k from Vodafone store with 2yr warranty.

ALSO there are many custom ROM support available to it. Just go to XDA Dev. forums Even it has a ICS beta/alpha build going on in XDA/CyanogenMod forums.

some features/improvements available in CM v.7.x ON this model:
-improved battery life..way better!!
-multi touch support!

and yeah, do chk youtube for a demo!

Secondly, I was thinking to with Micromax A70 (i know this sucks buuuuT chk the specs : price ratio).

But it does NOT have CyanogenMod support nor is there any active development going on; thx to Micromax; they ain't releasing the code for kernel

Though I guess I'll stick to VF858 smart here for now; at 5k its actually a good deal and with CM 7.2 users have reported a pretty good battery life!

UPDATE:
I really dont have much* idea about the A70 BUT the VF858 (the vodafone one) is having quite good specs.
with capacitive touch, 600mhz proc, adreno 200 GPU, having a qualcomm chipset (forgot the no.), gps, wifi, 3.5mm audio out. It s more than we could get for in the open market at less than 5k (precisely at 4.95k )

On the other hand, HTC Explorer also looks good heee

Received the product today , after using resistive touch for a year + , cap. touch is tooo sensitive xd

with Mobile i got

sync my contact,msg from old Nokia 5233 was very very easy , htc provided with step by step instruction on PHone on how to sync (did via bluetooh , took ~15 sec only )

one think i noticed is HTC not detecting my bsnl 2g sim, is a 3G sim must ?

or did i insert sim incorrectly?

tried now , i am able to make PH call with my friend's BSNL 2G sim o.0 but not with my 2g sim which was ok with 5233 nokia ,mayb my friends 2g sim was newer version than mine
