Technologically wise it is a smart move .

My post was in other aspect which I think wont do justice to the thread.

Lol, NOW I got the point of your post! ;)

Well, I really believe that switching to Linux would follow in other governmental departments too, and I hope all the money that they save from the softwares are put to some other good use, like building better infrastructures, and hiring educated staffs!

Exactly. They don't need updated software also. Just something for documents and internet, that's all.

Courts maintain database of all records with them which is being real time available to the public and lots of online work is over court system so any robust OS selection is a welcome step..

I think by now linux is rather ready to be deployed in the kind of applications the government normally has. I mean its highly customizable, and you can have distros which automatically start with a single full-screen app instead of anything else and have it shutdown when the app closes, you can have a very high level of access control and security and finally for normal document processing linux is more than capable.

If they implement this everywhere a LOT of money can be saved. :)

It's coming I think. We at NABARD have adopted OpenOffice in 2008-09 and since last year we are purchasing 10% of our PCs with Ubuntu. Guess something's in the air. ;)
