Nope, not a single IT company does that for freshers like us, companies like adobe, microsoft might give one but we are not at those level yet ;)

Both Wrong. It depends upon business unit and platform policies solely based on compliance+employee strength in a particular dev center. Companies like ericsson who just grew up to CMMI L6 ( google it ) are providing laptop+ubuntu to every single employee they are recruiting be it fresher or tranisition. Companies like TCS a home of more than half the population of total kolkata IT, cant really afford ( think about it, TCS cant afford! it means something ) to give a fancy laptop just for doing development and support work! Go to Chennai TCS client satelite center near T-Nagar, you'll find BCA graduates dealing with Macbooks. In Kolkata TCS, oracle solution architect ( my friend ) could not manage a permanent "chair" to seat for 3 months...let alone laptop :D:D

but tkin...awesome purchases...dat camera...very easy to handle and shoots better pictures than it should really :)

@anirbandd....some serious looking cabby u got there man...like the cabby's saying "you dare play dave on me" :D

^^In Patna, the situation was exactly opposite. Even Flipkart was cheaper.

THAT is a surprise to me! So long I had the impression that regarding availability and prices of gadgets (including PC/components), Kolkata is the worst! If Patna is really worse off, I do empathize with you. As for myself, for once, being proven wrong is a pleasant surprise!

In search for Tech Gyan!
Welcome to exponentially-raised prices-Bay! ;)

I second that! You need to search extensively on such platforms (online marketplaces) as ebay. Technically, there are millions of vendors selling stuff on ebay, and there are multiple vendors selling same products, and thus, for one product you may find many different prices from different vendors. Many a times, the prices are ridiculously quoted, like, for example, about a fortnight ago, I was looking up a P&S camera, to gift someone. The price of the same stuff ranged from 12.4K to 16.9K on ebay, while the MRP was 14.9K. So, actually, a few vendors were selling off that cam for more than it's MRP, I finally bought it for 14.5K from a local Sony store, as I was a bit short on time for the shipping and other headaches.
When purchasing on such online marketplaces, as you would do in a physical market, you need to search and compare the prices and features for the product you are looking to buy.
So, JAAGO GRAHAK JAAGO!:-D

@ tkin: You seem to be on a shopping spree. Nice. Congrats for your purchases and all the best for your TCS joining.

@ D3p: Congrats for that SGSIII.

Trust me you dont need a macbook. We are dealing with clients , running thousand lines of raw unit tested code and DB queries in Windows XP (still!!!!) and the whole system is stable like a British Cathedral. Such security, such ease and such power from that old OS is unbelievable. Macbook is basically a flaunt device and in office, it only suits people with casual stack, hot (lady) co-workers and coffe-table-geek-attitude. No real power. Are u up for a shallow note or some serious business ?

It is as sam_738844 said. In tcs, one doesnt get a place to sit at times. Laptops are for higher roles and/or client specific.
Eg: Freshers working on an apple project just had top-of-the-line apple products/systems to work on.

LOL, just for flaunt and because its free :D

Lol. I dont hate it, but i wont pay for one anyday.

I think TCS will give you a laptop for free for office work when you join. Don't these IT companies do that?
they give but not as a gift but as a part of providing equipment to employees which they must return on their termination of employment. In companies like TCS no way they will give to a fresher.

But this situation is perfectly described as
It depends upon business unit and platform policies solely based on compliance+employee strength in a particular dev center.

BTW what's the fuss about having a laptop provided by company when you have restrictions about you can't do that you can't do this

Join IBM, they will reward you with a laptop withing very few days after your project joining. A typical Lenovo Thinkpad. After giving it to you they will smile a bit...and you will know that you are now royally even presidentially screwed :D Laptop is a curse in office...stay away from it as long as possible.
