Right off the assembly line
Hi all,

I have made up my mind to buy a scanner. But the problem is I can't decide which scanner to buy.

Right now I have zeroed upon two models. One is HP ScanJet 2400 which costs around Rs. 3,200/- and the other is Canon CanoScan 3200F which costs around Rs. 8,000/-. I really love the extra features which the Canon scanner has where as the HP model is pretty much entry-level. Which of these two do you recommend. You can read about the Canon CanoScan 3200F at *reviews-zdnet.com.com/Canon_CanoScan_3200F/4505-3136_16-30569389-2.html?tag=top

See e.g. this thread at *www.debonairblog.com/blog/index.php?p=198 featuring sexy model Sonja Walker. I guess the picture has been taken using a digital camera. Suppose this pic was published in a magazine or a book how would one scan it to attain such clarity and clean look. What type of scanner would suffice for the job.

If there is some other scanner you want to recommend, please do so. Eagerly awaiting your reply. Thanks for the same. Have a nice day. Bye.

No low-end scanner can scan the pictures from a magazine accurately and still maintain the results. There will always be some loss of quality.

BTW, please don't post links to porn sites

The problem with choosing a scanner is that it involves factors that cannot really be spelt out numerically. Visual judgement is essential. For that matter, the same is true of printers.

2-3 years ago, I bought a Microtek 3800 for some 3+k. It's probably no longer available and I don't have any specific model to recommend, but as an example of what to look for in a scanner : The Microtek 3800 has a very fast preview mode, much faster than many more expensive models. Scan quality is also very good for the price class. With default settings, the scan output is slightly too dark and has a slightly bluish tinge. Both are easily corrected from the settings. Greyscale reproduction is also good.

IMO, a very high dpi specification is not essential. E.g., scanning at 9600 dpi would result in an unmanageably huge file size.

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

I think I will go ahead and buy the Canon scanner. And sorry for posting that link to a porn site, though I don't think it's a hardcore and the picture of Sonja was certainly not offensive. But anyway I will avoid posting such links as examples. Sorry again.
