Is it true that Plasma's have to be operated in specific room settings? Never had this problem with my LED TV but the blacks looked grey on the Plasma TV with a little hint of afternoon sun in my room.

Yes, Plasmas are good in a dark room not if you have sunlight or lot of artificial lighting.

Plasma's are energy guzzlers meant to produce the most sharpest and vivid pictures so your issue sounds strange. Even though there are LED TV's which now have minimal color loss even with sunlight or viewing at acute angles, not sure they can compete with a Plasma TV in terms of color depth even now. Just tinker a bit with the PQ settings and it should be sorted.
