One option given to me for the mobo is Zotac GF-8200. As it is nvidia based MoBo, nVidia's unified drivers would benefit in linux.

Also should I go for 1x2GB RAM or 2x1GB (to use dual-channel)?

AthlonII X3 435 is the processor I am opting for.

with Nvidia chipset on AMD proccy, many many features on the AMD processor will be turned off. so better stay away from Nvidia or Via or chipsets like that.

opt for 1 single stick. will cost 1k less.

Can you please let me know the features I might be devoid of if I choose nVidia chipset?

Also with nVidia chipset I have option of HybridPower which GeForce 8200 MoBo and my video card (9800GTX+) supports. It will help me in saving power while browsing internet or using office applications.

Hybrid Power is only useful if you are using Laptop, which runs on battery. When you are doing non graphics Intensive task, it switches to the on-board graphics to save power. Not really useful in desktop.
This is not with nvidia chipset. if you are using Win 7, it is possible also within the ATI card and and AMD onboard graphics.

Sam is right about the feature thing. For a long time, Nvidia does not release any new chipset for AMD platform. 8200 is an age old Chipset.
For example advance Clock Calibration (ACC) [for core unlocking and smart overclocking], use of AMD Overdrive utility, Hyper Transport 3 support will be disabled.

And go with the Jaskanwar Singh's suggestion. The price of AMD processors and DDR3 ram has been reduced. So probably you will get everything under your budget.
