PC needed on a Budget

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')

Mainly buying pc to run applications like Vmware. I'm learning active directory so would be running windows server in Vmware. I would prefer a system with good processing power and memory so that multitasking can be done. I know that the budget is on the lower side but I cannot strech it further.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.

15k: will be able to strech by a maximum of 2k or so.

3. Planning to overclock?
no

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?

Windows 7. windows server 2008

5. How much hard drive space is needed?

Not much hdd space required. 160 GB will do. I have couple of laptop's for those extra space.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.

I have a Spare Samsung Hdtv . Will use it.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?

Ups , KB + Mouse, speakers, Monitor is not required.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?

This month

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?

No

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?

New delhi. I'm open to buying online.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?

Thanks for the prompt response guys.
Will there be any significant difference in performance between the CORE I3 2100 and GT 620? Do i need to look into any AMD based config too since i might be able to squeeze in 4 cores in the budget which may come handy for Vmware?

To be honest i will be able to do with a 160 GB HDD which i heard is around 1.7k in NP.I don't need much space since i have couple of laptop's which i use to save my stuff too.

Guys, look again at the OP's requirements and you will find he has mentioned and stressed in Multi-tasking performance, not in gaming performance. In Multitasking environment when you are using a Server OS, normally more the number of cores, more performance you'll get and in Toms Hardware review it is clearly shown that even a Athlon II X3, running at 3 GHz+ outperforms most of the SB Dual Cores and even a FX-4100 is recommended over G620.

Here is my suggestion:-

Athlon II X3 425 ( 3 Cores, 2.7 GHz, 1.5 MB L2 Cache) @ 3.55K
AMD Athlon II X3 425 Processor, Compare and Buy latest AMD Processors Online in India: bitFang.com
GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2P Rev 3.1 Mother Board @ 2.6K
Corsair Value 1333 MHz 4GB X 2 @ 2.4K
LG 22X DVD Writer SATA @ 0.85K
Corsair CX 430 V2 @ 2.2K
WD Caviar Blue 500 GB SATA II @ 4.05K

Total = 15.65K. But I would suggest you to get FX4100, current available @ 6.3K. The Athlon II X3 is out of stock in Bitfang. Call 'em and check if they can arrange one for you. Also do check the local computer market of your area.

Let me tell ya something:

1. Phenom II 840 is not a Black Edition Processor and Black Edition means something, AMD doesn't attach the name to make the name more attractive. So don't post wrong info.
2. It is not available anywhere, not locally or not in Online shops Please provide a link if you know where it is available.

While posting, try to crosscheck what you are posting.

Thanks guys for recommending the system that suits my needs. I liked the below mentioned config with Cilus mentioned but not able to find the processor online or offline.

Athlon II X3 425 ( 3 Cores, 2.7 GHz, 1.5 MB L2 Cache) @ 3.55K
GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2P Rev 3.1 Mother Board @ 2.6K

LG 22X DVD Writer SATA @ 0.85K
Corsair CX 430 V2 @ 2.2K
WD Caviar Blue 500 GB SATA II @ 4.05K

@ Cilus

How about replacing the 500 GB Hdd with a 160GB one. Heard from couple of people that it's 1700 rs in Nehru place now and maybe i can use the extra saved money on a better processor like FX 4100 or any other quad core from AMD. I don't need a lot of space in my new desktop.lcan you also recommend any alternate mobo which supports 16 GB mem with 1600 Mhz clock speed

Hi,

Athlon II X3 425 doesn't seem to be available online or offline. How about replacing it with Athlon II X4 645. it's available for 4.5k in nehru place. How about this config.

Athlon II X3 645 @ 4.5k
GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2P Rev 3.1 Mother Board @ 2.5K
Corsair Value 1333 MHz 4GB X 2 @ 2.4K
LG 22X DVD Writer SATA @ 0.85K
Corsair CX 430 V2 @ 2.1K
160 GB SATA Hdd @ 1.7k
Basic case @ 1000

Does this config look good for 15k budget?
Just wanted to ask one more question. I'm not much into gaming but impressed by Battlefield 3 and would to play. What would be budget GPU to add to above config so that i can play BF3 in decent resolution.

Gigabyte HD 7750 at 6.5k can give reasonable fps even at 1080p medium settings in Battlefield 3.

If you dont wanna spend that much ... you can get a Zotac GT 240 GDDR5 at 3.4 - 4k. Look for GDDR5 and not GDDR3 . It can give 50 fps at 1366*768 on high.

Yes, it is indeed a very good config. Athlon x4 645 is a quad core and it will surely help in multitasking but change dvd writer to HP they are better than LG.

@ Sainatarajan

Thanks for the reply. Well, i tried to look for the card( GT 240) you mentioned on various website but could not find it at 3.5k. Most of them have priced it above 4k. Flipkart is selling it for 4.2k. Do you have any website link/ offline store where it's selling 3.5k?

I also checked abut HD 6670 GDDR5. it's 5.2k here in Delhi. will there be significant performance difference between GT 240 and HD 6670?
