Hi, to all..

I am a university professor. Now, I have to buy a pc for the following applications:

1. Electronics Design Tools Like ORCAD, XILINX, MODELSIM (which are processor hungry and memory hungry... but i dont know whether they are capable of running in more than one threads using lot cores available now a days)

2. Office applications like a number of word documents, spreadsheets, pdf documents

3. Reference from a lot of university, libraries online (browsing) and checking emails

4. Programming in Visual Studio, Matlab, NI Labview

5. Multimedia player (mostly audio songs)

6.At very random games

Most of these will be utilized at same time except games.

Currently I have a 1 320GB 7200rpm Seagate Baracuda Harddisk, 1 Samsung DVDRW(SATA), 1 LG DVDRW(IDE), a HD LG LED LCD 22" Monitor (recently bought), Creative Live 24 Bit 5.1, Stereo Speakers, Mouse (PS 2), Keyboard (USB) in my old pc. My Old PC configuration is 1 GB RAM, PIVHT 2.8GHz, Intel GAV915 Board bought in January 2005. As it is becoming slower for the above applications, I tend to buy a new PC.

My friends have given the following configuration suggestions.

1. Intel i7 950 3.06 GHz
Gigabyte GAX58AUD3USB3
2 x 2 GB DDR3 1066 or 1 x 4GB DDR3 1066 RAM
ASUS NVIDIA GEFORCE GT240 or GTX430 1 GB DDR3
520 to 550 W PSU
Cabinet like Gigabyte Luxo M 1004 (GZ-L2BSAX) or Cooler master Elite RC430 -KWN1 or Zebronics Pro Black Jack

2. Intel i7 950 3.06 GHz
Intel DX58SO
2 x 2 GB DDR3 1066 or 1 x 4GB DDR3 1066 RAM
ASUS NVIDIA GEFORCE GT240 or GTX430 1 GB DDR3
520 to 550 W PSU
Cabinet like Gigabyte Luxo M 1004 (GZ-L2BSAX) or Cooler master Elite RC430 -KWN1 or Zebronics Pro Black Jack

3. Intel i5 660 3.33 GHz
gigabyte h55 m usb3
2 x 4 GB DDR3 1066 or 1 x 4GB DDR3 1066 RAM
Seagate Baracuda 7200rpm 1 TB SATA HDD
520 to 550 W PSU
Cabinet like Gigabyte Luxo M 1004 (GZ-L2BSAX) or Cooler master Elite RC430 -KWN1 or Zebronics Pro Black Jack.

They said P55 needs a GPU which may affect USB3 options and asked to go for H55. Now, i dont know which configuration i have to choose. I will not change the PC for atleast 5 - 6 year just as my old pc. Also I have not fixed my Budget. So please give me a help to decide which configuration will suit my needs. Also please give its approx. budget. I am living near to Madurai in Tamilnadu (which is 500kms interior of Chennai, Tamilnadu)

Thank you all for your kind and earliest replies...

Can you please let us know your round about budget?
---------------------------------------------------------
Core i7 950 - 14.3K
ASUS Sabertooth X58 / Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R - 13k
G.Skill 4GB DDR3 1600 Ripjaws CL7 @ 4.7k(get 2 sticks)
Corsair VX550 - 4.7k(though I doubt 550W is needed for this.Even 450/500W will do)
GPU - Get nVidia Zotac GTS450 - around 7.5k

Budget please? If u are on tight budget get x6 1090t and spend the rest on 8gb ram. The real life difference b/w 950 and 1090t is very small. Except heavy benches no app can utilise full potential of nehalem architecture. Instead 1090t + more ram will benefit u more.

hi thanks friends

i am going for intel i heard some tools like Xilinx, Matlab run faster on an intel processor. Also, here we are familiar with Intel than AMD.

is it true i5 661 3.33 GHz will be faster than i7 950 3.06 GHz while running single threaded applications, because I dont know :?: whether the EDA tools like Orcad, Modelsim, Xilinx are multi threaded.

thanks for your replies :)

Also, my budget without HDD, KeyBoard, Mouse, Any Drives, Monitor, (without any of these)..

Rs. 40 k to 46k.

G.Skill 2x4GB DDR3 1600MHz Ripjaws CL7 @ 9k
Seasonic S12II 520W - 4.2k
MSI GTS450 Cyclone - 7.5k
TOTAL 47.5

Bit of googling

Xilinx - Single threaded
Modelsim - Single threaded
Matlab - Somewhat multithreaded

Intel's turbo boost will take care of those single threaded apps. also i5 661 is no match for i7 950.

Ishu gupta's config looks rock solid for your budget. The gts 450 has got cuda which will help in that extra computation. Just add a good ups i.e apc 800va for about 4k.

You can also go for corsair vx450 @ 3.7k

Also opt for 4gb ram now and upgrade later if on tight budget. You can buy the ups in the cash saved and buy additional ram later.

Don't go for i5 661

Intel i7 920 ---- 13,900
This has been discontinued. Intel Core i7-950 is available for 14.5k and should be better.
Sabertooth x58 ---- 11,250
This price is good.

ASUS GT240 1GB DDR3 ------- 5200 (this is the latest available here...)
Outdated and old.
Cooler master Elite RC430 ----- 3100
CM Elite 430 should not be more than 2.7k

Cooler master Extreme power plus 500 w SMPS ---- 3475
All Cooler Master PSUs are crap.

Now, where do you live?

I'll only suggest you to go for the configuration posted by Ishu Gupta here. Try to make an online purchase.
