partition external hdd

hey i jus got a new hdd case fer ma 3.5'' hdd i hv connected it externally to my laptop..i am using windows xp home sp2..can u pls tell me a way in which i can partition this hdd using windows or any other way..its a seagate baracuda 80gb hdd

You partition it the same way you partition an internal HDD.

Go to Administrative tools > Computer management > Storage > Disc management

Just type diskmgmt.msc in Run
I would suggest you to partition the HDD as NTFS

If I partition it to more than 1 partition say 3 will each be mounted as a seperate drive and do I have to set the first partition of external HDD as active?

hey thnx fer dat but why shud i partition it as ntfs does it have any adv ova fat32???n how can i change it frm existin NTFS TO FAT32..the option doesnt show FAT32 while formattin pl help

You can never convert a partition from NTFS to FAT
only the reverse is possible

The advantage of NTFS is a single file size bigger than 2 GB can easily be stored while in FAT 32, a size of a single file can be less than 2 GB

The best example is storing an original Encarta Encyclopedia in ISO or NRG (Nero Proprietary Format) which is about 3.6 GB

When you store it in FAT 32,the file will be saved as ISO/NRG till 2GB and the rest 1.6 GB will be shown as an unknown file format in the same drive

Also using NTFS enables you to set file and folder level permissions and Indexing,File Encryption

So just use NTFS
