Hi,

I am facing some problem with my 2nd PC which started couple of months back, the first problem was SMPS problem.(*www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40951) which I solved today by installing a E-Life 500 watt SMPS,(can't afford Antec SMPS right now).

Now according to the above post all my drive, extra lan card works fine.
So I connect the Samsung DVD-Rom(5 years old) which was earlier disconnected to make system run,Now this drive simply refuse to boot any OS CD's which all are bootable.(WinXPSP2,My latest Ubuntu 6.10,Kubuntu 6.10,Knoppix 5 all are work perfectly another machine).
I run currently XP SP2 in this machine which I load earlier(July,2006) by using last this drive.

I have a Sony DVD Writer DRU-810A in my PC,but it can't boot any CD/DVD (*www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32000).

Besides booting OS CD's my samsung dvd-rom work perfectly with every CDs(long time back it lost DVD Playback ability) and same to my Sony DVD writer(Can't boot any CD/DVD but play every CD/DVD).

So I decide to go for a New optical drive,
My question is,Am I go for DVD-Writer or Go for DVD-Combo drive ?
Ok my question is more specific Is DVD-writer able to boot OS cds/dvds?

Please reply/confirm.[by DVD-writer owner who use their drive for OS booting purpose.]

N.B:-I have a HP DVD-Combo in another machine....It boot all CDs/DVD's.

Go for DVD-Writer (buy a Dual Layer).

I use my LG DVD-dual Layer Writer for OS booting purpose. The following are the Linux CD's & DVD's I boot with with my DVD-Writer.

1. Dreamlinux 2.2 Multimedia Edition (CD)
2. Fedora 6 (DVD)
3. Knopixx 5.11 (DVD)
4. Mandriva 2007 (DVD)
5. Centos 4.4 (DVD)
6. Open Suse 10.2 (DVD)
7. Sabayon (DVD)
8. Ubuntu 6.10 (DVD)

Prior to these I've used several others as well.

These days almost all DVD-Writer brands are good...however Lite-on & Sony are considered to be the best...I personally prefer Lite-on or LG. The price deference too is not much...in Lamington Road, Mumbai Sony (18x) DVD Writer (oem) costs only Rs.1700/- and the box packed one costs Rs.2000/- and the Asus 16x box packed costs Rs.2350/-

So it's basically your fancy as to which one you want to go for.

thanks all of you .....for so early replying.....thanks.

One more query....
Is there any hardware conflict after installing the new DVD-writer....as I told already have one[Sony DRU-810A] ??

Again, are both of them work well under Nero 7 in windows and K3B in Linux (I am going to load Suse 10.2 soon)??

[Still I am dependable on windows in some issues]

Please...Plaese ....Reply/Confirm......

1. No there should not be any hardware conflicts.

2. Yes it will work well under Nero 7 in Windows and under K3B in Open Suse 10.2...if you see my signature below I currently have Win XP & Open Suse 10.2 running on my system and I use Nero 7 for XP & K3B for Open Suse 10.2.
