ITS A LONG POST>>>>>>>PLEASE DO READ TILL END!!!!:-(

I was playing a game on my pc...then i closed it...in boom! all the icons on my desktoop were replaced by the "unknown image"..i dunno what it's called but u must be knowing that icon that windows shows when it does not recognise any file format.

i tried restarting, but it din't come back.

then i right- clicked & opened properties of each icon and selected its original icon (via "change icon" option)....All the icons came back this way except that of "my computer" & "my music"......

Any idea why this haapen?????

I also tried to restore my pc to a previos date, but "system restore" is not working...after restarting, it says "could not restore......as no changes were made"...which is so not true!!

One more thing (lastly......) i saw in my "my documents", there was a folder "my data sources" which i did not create and was recently made(b4 all this hpnd)...it had files like:
"+Connect to New Data Source.odc" and "+NewSQLServerDataConnnection.odc".........Is this any Malware's doing???

The interesting thing is that the other User accounts on my pc are working fine......

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Since you have closed the game abruptly, windows drive/files would hv been corrupt. Try a system restore on a point much earlier.

What happens when you log on into safe mode?

Do a system scan.

Post the results, wil help further.

I agree with the corrupted files(i feel its the dll ones)

I tried to restore it to a point which i had myself created months ago before installing some (trusted & legally free) programs...but it shows the same error "no changes were made so can't restore"....

I ran chkdsk....
Step 1 was clean..
Step 2 found some registry errors i think but it claimed that it had corrected them..
Step 3 was clean again..

I didn't try safe mode yet because pc is working fine when i log on as another user...it seems whatever went wrong only affected one user account (but i dunno how this is possible!)..

so for now, i created a new account for myself...and am working with it...i tried deleting my old one but that doen't happen....the user account window froze & again i had to close it via end task :(((....

Exactly after closing the game that day this is what happnd...

when i had exited the game, on the taskbar, a minimised game window was still visible...i tried to close it but it din't work then, so i had to use "end task"......it did show a warning saying..sumthing like "forcing this program to close might result in some undesirable changes"...(i don't remember the exact words :( )

By the way..i had this game long ago as well...its a simple one...dunno hw it caused so much trouble...

THANX FOR HELPING.. :)

It means ur user profile is corrupted. How did you try to delete the old account? did u try from computer management?

I tried to del it by good old control panel>>User Account option...
I'll try that again...it might not hav worked b'coz of the large amount of data in my docs, music, etc....

Btw, might sound like a dumb question, but how does a User Account get corrupted?? I mean is it possible for one account to go wrong without affecting other ones??

Certainly possible. All the working files, system files, setting files will be exclusive saved under the user profile and if anythn goes wrong, either it corrupts the profile or the system files itself.
Juz think, for making a simple mistake in Guest or limited user account, do u want the whole Windows to go corrupted including the default admin account? Thts serious m8.

You can login as admin, retrieve the data from the corrupted profile, I mean my docs, music et all. If u need.

Then you can try deleting the account from computer management.
control panel - admin tools - comp mgmt - expand local users and groups from left pane, click on users - right pane, right click on the user account and delete. This wil work, if ur method fails again.

hmm..gud one. Here u go..try this.

Right click My Computer, choose "Properties" then click on "System Restore" tab.

Put a check in the box for "Turn off Restore on all drives". Click OK, then Reboot your PC.

After you reboot, go back to the System Restore tab and uncheck the box. Click OK.

Next, go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools then click "System Restore". Choose "Create a Restore Point" and give it a name as u like.

For testing purposes, after u created a restore point, try to remove soem unwanted programs and once done, do a system restore and check.
