no audio sound from laptop speakers

not getting any sound while playing any audio file-while using window media player i get a msg Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file.-restarting lets the audio play but again the same problem- i have a win 8 lappie.please help.problem started today-even when i use my headphones i hear nothing

the matter is more serious than i thought-even with vlc player installed no sound.i cant even mute the speaker button on the sidebar-dont know whats wrong-the lappie wont read a headphone also whn connected- no audio at all even when using stored music files-
