You *can* play few popular Windows games via WINE, I play Dungeon Seige II, Neverwinter Nights, NFS Most Wanted, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on mine via WINE

As you are a noob, please go for Ubuntu Ultimate or Linux Mint Bcoz they have nearly all multimedia codecs installed. :)

if you have internet access then: click on this: ubuntu-restricted-extras
wait for about 3-4 sec after clicking. Then you will get a box, asking YES or NO:)

Click YES, and wait for a while maybe 10-15mins, for the process to finish
this will automatically install
Codecs
FLASH
Java
Ms- fonts

I do not know about playing Windows games on WINE. I think you should still stick to windows for that.

yes... wine does not simulate most of the games, leave alone modern games....

But CrossOver (Paid App) seems a lot better at running windows programs.... You can try the demo version to see if it works for the game you want to play!
