My dad needed a new phone to replace his current CDMA phone as data for cdma is costly.

1. Budget? 9k strictly.
2. Display type and size? 2.8 inches min.
3. Form Factor? bar, slider, flip? Bar
4. Preferred choice of brand? Samsung , Sony only .
5. Preferred input method (QWERTY, touchscreen, numpad, touch-n-type). touchscreen , touch-n-type.
6. What camera option you want? Please specify need for flash, autofocus, front facing camera.
Nothing specific. enough to click documents , text . front facing camera if available is good.

7. Preferred operating system? (Android, Symbian, iOS, Windows Phone etc).Android

8. Preferred connectivity options (3G, Wifi etc)Please specify clearly. 3g,wifi,gps

9. Preferred applications (Flash, Swype, GPS, etc)?
no idea.

10. Primary use of handset (multimedia, camera, mails, internet, gaming etc)? mails, internet, multimedia, occasional cam usage.

11. Any specific mobile phones in consideration? Samsung Galaxy Chat, Xperia Mini pro if i can find under 10k.

12. Any other info that you want to share. Needs to be a no frills easy to use phone and has to have atleast 4 gb storage inbuilt. really good speaker may also be necessary. Armv7 processor and 512 mb ram should be minimum.

PS: Thanks to Sam for providing the questionnaire

i'll say get Galaxy Chat. resolution won't be much of a problem unless your dad reads news or articles in mobile where pixelated display can cause problem. But it all boils down to what kind of input system is required. QWERTY looks best but not everyone likes it, specially ones that have only used candybar mobiles only. so decide on that front and the mobile can easily be finalized.

I will detail his usage a bit. He uses Times Of India , would browse the net a lot and lastly he does all those QuickOffice doc creation and editing. Also he uses those Tax Calculator sort of things. Regarding games , I would be the one playing on his phone. Nothing too heavy, just the occasional Temple Run / Temple Run 2 , Subway Surfers, Angry Birds.

Hope I have given a decent idea.

Now keeping these in mind , is the Chat good or should I consider other options ??

i think better go for Chat. Reason is simple: with most mobiles half of the display gets cuts off by keyboard. here you get a physical QWERTY so you get to use the complete display for any kind of use. And when it comes to editing by an elder person, nothing matches the feedback from a physical keypad.

else pick a 4"+ droid which makes sure that most of the screen is available for use.

I personally think that at lower price points it's better to buy something from Micromax rather than Samsung since it's real VFM. Also you mentioned that you'd like to play casual games on your device - Galaxy Chat won't give you smooth gaming performance and might not even be supported by a few games.

Dad doesnt particularly like Timescape. And regarding Micromax, he would not use a phone at all than buy mmx. :p It wouldnt be wrong to call him a Samsung fanboy. What about HTCs ??

If he's a Samsung fanboy(like my dad :p) ask him to get a Note 2. No regrets whatsoever.
