Need to buy speakers, need help!!

I have been looking to buy speakers for my place for a long time but I cant quite decide on whether to buy 2.1 or 5.1
My budget is around 5-6k but my problem lies in deciding whether to buy a solid 2.1 in that range or a reasonable 5.1. I have done some research and the 5.1 systems of F&D seem to fit the bill, F6000 especially but some people are telling me that a 2.1 from Altec, F&D, Edifier etc will satisfy my needs and not burn a hole in my pocket.
I am a bass lover and want my speakers to have high bass without distortion at high volumes.

For music, 2.1 is a good choice..
For movies n gaming, get a 5.1..

Altec Lansing's current line-up is bad..
Can't comment on F&D.
Some good Edifier models are unavailable right now..

And one more thing, the power and performance of the speakers i.e. the volume and the sound output is determined by total RMS output, right?

I did find some good speakers in Edifier and F&D both, Altec Lansing is highly recommended by audio store owners. Can you suggest me some good models across any trusted brand in my budget?

I basically need them for music, so I think I'll go for a 2.1 now as you have suggested
