Need small tool to browse HDD when WIndows fails

Recently, one of my neighborer's Windows went corrupt and he needed to copy some files urgently. His optial drve doesn't work so I thought of creating a bootable Ubuntu disk. 7z reported 59 min. as the completion time after 10 min, so I stopped. What I need is a small (As small as possible) utility than I can put on bootable pen drive and copy files from PC.

I already have Hiren's boot cd. the problem is, the time required to create a bootable pen dive is too much. The sole purpose of this thread is to reduce preparation time.

Just use any Linux Live CD. Best way to access your HDD.

try using a different pen drive as a bootable drive. The pen drive which you are trying to use may be corrupted.
