News has just come in that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), has made a final decision on the document file format OXML (Open eXtended Markup Language). Sources tell tech2.com that with 13 Against, 1 Abstain and 5 For, the technical committee entrusted with deciding whether Microsoft-backed OXML format will be accepted, has stuck by its earlier decision. The "Yes" votes came from industry body NASSCOM, Microsoft itself and Indian software giants Infosys, TCS and Wipro.

if they had made it a standard, then M$ would have started collecting Rs. 5800 crores

Very correctly said and no disputing that! ;) Also, their infrastructure is 99% based on MS products.

:confused::confused:

I'm happy that India is the first country to finalize their vote and reject it after the BRM started in geneva this month. Good to see India taking a lead and countries to follow.

These companies get huge business through MS, directly and indirectly even if the client is some other company, MS takes the main project and transfers the work to one of the Sub-Contractor.

IMHO,GNU/Linux and FOSS awareness is genearlly high in India. :) that may be another reason that let the sarkar know that M$ monopoly sucks! :)

I am happy that the new format has been rejected...

I discovered that this new format was only a host of XML files, archived...
Just change the extension to .zip, and open it using winZip....
You can then read the document contents from the XML files....:p

Well both the formats OXML and ODF are just zipped XML's, FYI. And that's a good idea, IMO.

It's also quite sweet to see Microsoft's bribing of Indian NGOs go down the drain. :lol:

I guess they thought that when you pay money to an NGO to support their sadistic pleasure, it doesn't become a bribe :lol:
