1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: I'm an architecture student, and I'll be using Autocad, 3ds max, photoshop etc. My brother being a gaming buff would like to play games like GTA 4, NFS series etc. While we're both away, my dad's going to be using the PC for just internet, watching movies, listening to songs etc.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans:45K. I'm willing to extend it to 50K.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans:Not an expert, but I would like to try overclocking, yes.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans:Windows 7 prolly, and I'd like to dual boot occasionally with variants of linux as well.

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans:I've already got a 500GB internal AND an external, so I won't be needing any more.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: 21" would be nice I think. I'm not too sure about screen resolutions, so anything which is good for 3d, gaming, movies etc.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans:Hard disk.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans:Very soon. Within a week at most.

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans:I've not done it before, but I want to try.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans:I live in Kerala. I'll try to source stuff locally, but I'm open to buying online as well.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans:Nothing much, except that this is going to be our second PC after 7 years (yes you read that right  )..so its pretty special.

I think OP has a budget of 45K to 50K, not 40K.
So just modifying a little in thetechfreak's config:

Motherboard: Asus M5A-880M AM3+ @ 5.1K
GPU: Gigabyte HD 7850 2 GB OC @ 15.2K
PSU: Seasonic S12II 520W 80+ Bronze PSU @ 3.7K

I've got no issues except the processor and the monitor.

Since I'm going to be doing pretty processor intensive tasks, any six core processors I could try? The monitor I read reviews of and it seems it's a budget monitor and a bit low on features.

Performance improvement by upgrading ram to 6 GB?

The processor is fine and there is high chance of unlocking it to a 6 core processor 1605T.

Alternate option is Phenom II X6 1075T @ 7.5K
BenQ G2220HDL is a gr8 VFM monitor and your budget is also tight to accomodate a 10K monitor without significantly sacrificing other components.

One more question - are the graphics cards suggested purely for gaming or are they going to offer any significant improvement in CAD or render times?

OK - finally convinced my dad to buy everything from Flipkart, and this is what I've got lined up.

Processor AMD 3 GHz AM3 Phenom II 1075T Processor | Processor | Flipkart.com

Motherboard ASUS M5A88-M Motherboard | Motherboard | Flipkart.com

Monitor Benq 21.5 inch LED - GL2250HM Monitor: Flipkart.com

PSU Seasonic S12II-520 520 Watts PSU | Psu | Flipkart.com

Graphics Card Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1 GB GDDR5 Graphics Card | Graphics Card | Flipkart.com

RAM Corsair DDR3 4 GB (1 x 4 GB) PC RAM (CMV4GX3M1A1333C9) | Ram | Flipkart.com X 2

Cabinet Cooler Master Elite 310 Cabinet (Red) | Cabinet | Flipkart.com

Keyboard + Mouse Microsoft Wireless Desktop 800 Wireless Keyboard | Keyboard | Flipkart.com

Speakers, Optical Drive, Hard Disk I'll use the ones I have. UPS I'll buy locally.

Total comes out to 39k+ in flipkart.

Any suggestions? I need this PC set up quick that's why I'm in a hurry.

Bad, actually, unbalanced config.
Reason: Check other good configs and you, yourself can understand.

@OP: I'm 10 days late from your ast posting. Unless you have ordered all of them from flipkart already, I would suggest you to change graphics card from 550ti to 6870/6950/7850.
