I was thinking of upgrading my PC a while ago, but as of now I'll just buy a new one.

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: 1920x1080 gaming : All the latest games heh. Applications would be basic and watching 1080p vids.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 45k excluding monitor, HDD and other peripherals.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: No for CPU. May do GPU.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Win 7/8

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: N/A

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: N/A

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: Monitor, HDDs, DVD writer, input devices.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: within a week

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: have built 4 desktops prior to this one.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans:New, Delhi; yes

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: Need any info on good shops at Nehru Palace.
1. Motherboard - ?
2. Processor - i5 Ivy -which one?
3.Graphics Card - budget 15k - thinking of gtx 660 or ATi 7850. How much does 7870 costs ?
4. PSU - 550w - ?
5. RAM - 2or3 x 4 GB - ?
Was thinking of getting a mobo and processor for ~20k, gfx card for 15k and RAM +PSU for 7-8k or about. Also what about cooling ? how much do the non-stock ones for CPU cost ?
What about 1TB 6gbps HDDs ? do they perform better in any way ? I'm not going for an SSD now.. may do.. will see how it goes when i'm buying.

Why? The 7870 > 7850. 660ti is over priced (last I checked it was 22 or 24k). You can OC the 7870 too if you need a performance boost.

^^agreed, specially after recent driver updates from AMD which provided maximum performance boost to 7870 particulary, going for 660ti makes no sense. If at all you want to go in the range of 20-22k then 7950 is a better option IMO and as always the rig suggested by Cilus is just about perfect for that budget.

HD 7870 edges out GTX 660 Ti at a cheaper price with the latest AMD driver update. Go for it.

That was due to a BIOS issue. Sapphire has released a new BIOS, both from their HD 7950 Vapor X and HD 7870 which has fixed the issue, AFAIK. Also there was some driver issues with the Catalyst 12.7 Beta and 12.8 WHQL version. That has been fixed mostly with 12.11 Beta Driver. Did a little digging and found it out from Hard Forum and Guru3d forum.

This looks good, I may bump the budget by another 10k and go with i5 3570k and a Z77 board, maybe add in a CM 212 EVO Cooler.
As I understand 7850 < 660 < 7870 < 660Ti =/< 7870 OC. I'll look for either MSI or ASUS 7850 but filpkart shows em 20k+ and the gigabyte at 26k.
I was hoping to keep the gfx card budget between 15-18k, so 7950 is way off (flipkart has one for 25k).
Hope I find it cheap at nehru palace.
