Lenovo and Novell will offer Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 preloaded on Lenovo notebooks beginning in the fourth quarter.

The Suse notebooks - including the ThinkPad T series - will be available to volume and individual customers.

"We have seen more customers utilizing and requesting open source notebook solutions in education, government and the enterprise since our ThinkPad T60p Linux announcement, and today's announcement expands upon our efforts by offering customers more Linux options," said Sam Dusi, vice president of product marketing at Lenovo's notebook business unit.

Lenovo has previously certified ThinkPad models for Linux use, and provided support for Suse in its Help Center utility for the T60p. That model, announced in August 2006, was shipped without an operating system so buyers had to obtain and instal it themselves.

Notably, the new arrangements mean customers will be able to receive support for the preloaded Linux directly from Lenovo. Novell's role will be to provide maintenance updates.

Earlier this year, Dell announced it would offer Ubuntu Linux on a trio of consumer systems (two desktops and one notebook). However, operating system support was an optional extra that could be purchased from Canonical.
