Thats not called decreasing of Battery Life.
Its the draining of battery due to use.
Downloading is similar to using your laptop for any other purpose.
It has no special impact on battery life.

Still keep the laptop plugged in to wall socket so that the laptop dont runs out of juices mid-night.

I meant that if he lets the laptop run on battery every night, for downloading or whatever other purpose, then the battery life is going to go down pretty fast...

Thats universal fact.

Try to get the point.Downloading overnight wont have any
severe impact in battery life.
