1. tweak your system (remove unwanted start-ups frm msconfig).
2. do BIOS tweak. (allocate 64/128MB RAM for Video).
3. Download latest drivers from HP Software & Driver Downloads
4. see whether your XP & DirectX are updated.

i hav to DVD's but they are not original i think..

if the Vendor provided then its original.

check which one is the XP Recovery Disk.

the DVD will have a "HP" lable on them.
you can use other XP CD to create a partition or see if this tutorial helps you...

yup, you wont get any support if you do that, & why do you want to install a pirated XP when you have the original.

if you install pirated XP, then you'll face many problems, like "no updates" (its obvious:D), CANT install IE7, WMP11 ...:D

I recommend you to throw your Compaq and get a new computer. Macs are the best option - they're responsive and even Mac Mini (the most affordable one) runs Windows Vista. Actually, Mac mini is the cheapest computer I've found that runs Vista Home Premium.

If you're the victim of poverty, and want to keep your Compaq, then move to some other operating system like Linux. They're fast - much faster than Windows.

From my personal experience, Windows is the only OS that hangs and crashes. Linux and Mac OS X both are great (and more affordable) alternatives.

^man @Manshahia JUST GOT his new laptop & you're REALLY HELPING him :???:

try helping him in his problem dude:)

btw i have HP Pavilion Desktop, pre-loaded with XP Home (SP2), till date i've never (NEVER!) experienced a Crash.

all the crashing thing happen frequently on PIRATED XP, but RARELY (nil in my case) on Original.

It just DEPENDS on how the User uses his PC:wink:, i dont (never) go on clicking evry link saying "free s/w, porn...":D

& also till date i've never Re-Installed XP for any issue with XP or Virus.

had to re-install, coz i changed the m/b.

^^ No way. You probably never open your HP. I also don't understand how pirated XP crashes while the original doesn't.

Of course it depends on the user. If you have a dozen of "anti-" tools running on your background, you may be secure.

On OS X and Linux, even if you purposely click on those ads, you won't get infected. OS X has something like UAC- but far less annoying and far more effective. It appears only when you make significant changes to your system, not just when you make any changes to your system.

nope i do open my HP very often:D, (both h/w & s/w way :D)

i mingle around the XP registry (Mr. Vista's hacks) , cleaning some leftover app.'s entry, editing Game registries, but till date nothing (no crash).

i faced a problem where the desktop remained empty (no explorer/ icons), but found out someone (my frnd) did the Damage (not XP on itself).

why genuine XP crashes rarely, its becoz the files are genuine, tested (unlike p-rated, most files changed to run XP - its obvious:D),

for example- take Colin McRae 2005 game, the pirated version crashes as soon as a option is selected, sometimes it happens randomly, i experienced it:D, then i got a Original game, it has never had a problem, no crashes.

I donot think he will have any problems excet procurin drivers if he uses another windows disc but uses the same product key that is printed on his COA.

Seriously compaq sux in this regard, i got a c303 and the fools provided a manual cd but no driver disc, they cud have put drivers in the disc with manuals.

but the XP version provided with HP products are all OEM, & OEM XP key does not work on retail version XP

btw your Compaq should have come with the driver CD (on a small [mini] CD), it seems its the Vendor's fault in your case

If you're not poor, then there's no reason why you shouldn't get a mac. Mac OS X almost never crashes, has no viruses and spywares to worry about, and comes with many great softwares built-in do that you can do many tasks right away, without the need to buy additional softwares. The reasons to get a mac are nicely explained at www.apple.com/getamac , so you may want to have a look.

Besides, even the most affordable mac, the Mac Mini runs Windows Vista with Aero and all that.
