Is avast! antivirus effective enough over fighting VIRUSES.. Since, it is freeware, I doubt its use.
Norton Antivirus is very heavy on my system resources and I need to find an alternative as a home user with practically little internet use.
 Should avast! be trusted? I hve ZoneLabs firewall installed and also Ad-aware for fighting hackers and adwares.. So, all that is left is a good antivirus agent..

I have tried other free AV's like AVG, Antivir but none of them have found viruses that avast has. plus its the lightest on the system and has really small updates. trust me, avast is even better than paid alternatives like norton.

Avast is very very gud ..... jus install it ...switch on automatic updates and forget about it ....

its new web scanner feature has some campatibility problems with zone alarm .....
till such time Zone Labs and Alwil Software fix the problem u can turn of the web scanner feature ...... its fine if you turn it off !!!

cheers !!

AVG feel better for me. when i install kazaa once some how (using Avast fully update) i found virus in my system. It automatically send files from my system to Network in minutes I can see around 100 -200 MB is sending. I can't connect Interent. Avast did find the virus. AVG cleaned the Virus some exploit virus or adware. Now i'm happy with AVG

I am so much fed up of jumping on diff avs that i have stopped using any av. In 6 years only 6 viruses attacked and of them 5 due to corrupt floppies. So for me spywares are a bigger threat than virus.

See guyz...whenever we say avast is good the first reason for that is it is free...what we wanna say is it is good being a freeware...but when u compare it with the paid antivirus giants like NAV or Mcaffe, is the performance equally good? I wonder about it quite a bit..I am currently using NAV 2005 but i am not very satisfied because even after fully updating it cant detect a virus which has removed "Appearance" and "Desktop" Tab from my Display Properties...secondly can you suggest a third party firewall (or is windows firewall good enough?..i dont think so) which won't lower my current cable net speed at all...

The best firewall would be ZoneAlarm (visit www.zonelabs.com) firstly because it is free and offers supreme protection against hackers. Microsoft has greatly improved its firewall in SP2 but it still needs drastic changes. Moreover, I would recommend you Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) as a great tool for removing spyware and malicious software from your PC.
As for Avast!, I have loved its interface and I am discovering more and more things about Avast! and am loving it more. Well, true its work may not be as high as those of paid ones like NAV 2005 or McAfee but its work is ver very good and it can placed at somewhere near NAV 2005.
I hope my trust in Avast! deepens everyday...
