This is a minimum you pay in two years

We checked a few websites, including AT&T, to learn how much the iPhone actually costs. We did some simple math and learned that over two years you need to spend at least $2038.76 to get the top notch 8 GB iPhone.

The minimum AT&T contract costs $59.99 a month and it includes unlimited internet over edge and 450 minutes of talk time plus 200 SMS messages. This is way more than people are willing to pay for their phone bills in most of Europe.

When you multiply this sum with 24 months that is the minimum contract you will end up at $1439.76 for the plan, in case you don't make any additional costs and + $599 that you have to pay for the device itself.

You even need to pay a one time fee for activation of the phone. I can admit that I would definitely like to play with one of these but not at that price as this money can get you two if not three decent laptops.

Dismantlers reveal the truth

Apple is making a fortune by charging more than double the book price for the parts which make up its iPhone.

With the machine now being pulled apart it is clear which parts are being used for the new $500 phone.

Companies which have included parts are Intel, Broadcom, Texas Instruments, Infineon Technologies, Skyworks and Linear Technology.

Samsung, which is making the main microprocessor used to run the phone's operating system and various applications. Intel is supplying the NOR flash.

However if you add up all the bits this comes to just $200 in materials. The 8 gig version costs only $20 more to build but costs an extra $100.

Well on reading the title you think that iPhone actually costs $2000+ to Aple and it is slling it to us at $599 , then it would be a good deal.

that's what qwerty meant , and that's what i thought too until i read the first para of the post ;)

Man, you can even start another thread, proof I will give ;)

"Reliance Data Card - actual cost is Rs.46100 !!!"

Explanation : When i bough the card, cost was Rs.6500 (cost of card alone)

I used it for last 2 yrs and the service fee, that is 1650 per month for unlimited internet is 1650 * 24

So total comes to Rs.46100 Howz that ?

The official thread is already listing all drawbacks and problems of iPhone, and the manufacturing - selling price comparison is also there. But this is really surprising ! New ways to compare the price lol

When we buy a PC, if you pay Rs.30000, we will compare it like, actual price 30,000 + 24,000 for 2 yr ? As power bill may come upto Rs.1000 a month !!!

I do not understand how can we compare that ! When we buy a product, we pay for it, when it provide a service, we hae to pay seperately for that too, for any mobile, so that amount is also added to phone price ? Sorry but I can't understand that logic.

Anyway title was cool :) As QwertyManiac said, thats a good deal lol

din, I think what the author was trying to say is that since the iphone is tied with AT&T for minimum 2 year contract, and that the minimum plan costs so much per month, you are tied up for the 2000 odd bucks over the next two years...

Still, it is not a valid argument, and has been made deliberately to put the iphone in a biased light.

^^ This concept of costing is called "Relevant Costing", where u not only take the cost of the product, but the other cost, like running, maintaining and operating cost exclusively associated with the product.

It is a concept of "Cost Accounting"

Sorry to deviate. Carry on..........

Yes, I understood that. It is very similar to CDMA phones here, isn't it ? I mean if you buy a Tata Indicom phone, you can't make it work on other service providers isn't it ?

Same with the data card. If you buy Reliance data card, there is no option to give it back and get the money, there is no option to change service provider. You will have to pay every month.

But we can't tell the data card cost is Rs.46100. We all know its data card cost + the service fee.

As you said there is no point in comparing the service fee and adding it to phone price.

its not like that mate.. i mean if u even take something like nokia n95 from some carrier like at&t or any other in USA then it doesnt cost as much as the iphone
i wanted to show that apple is ripping off everyone by selling it at a very high price & AT&T is ripping of people by giving them an inferior plan i.e. no. of sms, free calls etc.
now i think u get it.. its all in comparison to other plans/offers.

Are you sure ? Atleast, you checked with AT&T or any other US mobile comapnies regarding the charges ?

Mostly, the talk plans will be like $40 and data $20, I mean the lowest plans. So how come $59.99 a month is high ?

Please explain ...

In India, when you buy a Reliance or Tata mobile phone, you get a set of plans and a set of phones. You can select any one from those and you just can't make your own plan or select a phone that is not in the list.

Very similar to that. Isn't it ? Still you think its a good logic comparing the plan charge and phone charge ?

Most people in India are like $60 per month! That's Outrageous! But fact of the matter is, most talk plans do cost that much in the States. Its just that we are (I am) used to paying $2 a month so it seems a bit high...

Dear ssk_the_gr8

Why should you rely on fudzilla.com ?

Please contact your friends in US, or check the AT & T website or any other mobile companies and you will know whether $60 a month is high or low.

huh. is it.

Check this link.

Samsung Blackjack + 2yr service plan costs $1900. Does this mean that Blackjack costs $1900.

FYI, Blackjack + 2yr plan @ $1900 is one of the best service plans available in US.

Blackberry Curve + 2yr contract costs $2,479.

Infact, majority people say that AT&T plan is very good and balances the price of iphone.

Price of iphone on a 2yr contract : $500
Price of Samsung Blackjack on a 2 yr contract: $75
Price of BB Curve on a 2yr contract: $200

Price of 2yr plan - iphone : $1919
Price of 2yr plan - blackjack : $1919
Price of 2yr plan - BB Curve: $2,279
