The AMD solution will be better for u.........
3500+ or higher
mobo ASUS A8N-E
Lite-on or Sony optic drive
rest is fine
But ASUS A8N-E does not have an IGP so....u will have to go for a graphics card also......u can get a 6200 if ur not much of a gamer but.....up u like playing games at high settings u will have to get 6600GT or higher

Well .. get this one .. with the Asus Mobo (STAY away from Intel Originals) ... u can have a guarantee of oc ur cpu to 3.6 GHz .. so u'll surely end up with 3.6 GHz dual core ....

Also make sure u get a better smps .. preferably atleast a 400W+ antec psu
...

And whats the model of the CPU ?? 830 , 840 ??

u can overclock to 3.6Ghz
but it doesnt mean that it will give the performance of real 3.6Ghz processor.
and also overclocking means improved temperatures
improved temperature means random restarts
and since its dual core when u overclock the load on the PSU will double
only antec true power PSU can handle the system with overclock

Well .. infact u'll get better perfomance than the actual CPU ... coz ur oc'ed CPU will be running at 960 MHz FSB ..

and also overclocking means improved temperatures
improved temperature means random restarts

Also ... the newer P4's can take a huge load .. i've a friend running it a 58c load .. yet stable .... no crashes ... but uber cool performance. ..

and since its dual core when u overclock the load on the PSU will double
only antec true power PSU can handle the system with overclock

And yess. . that what i said .. a higher config. should have a better PSU .. and in this case .. anything from Antec above 400W should do .. in fact if u check the wattage using the psu calculator (which is near perfect) .. the max load wattage should be around 320W max. with the oc ... so anything over 350W with atleast 25A across 12V (dual) should be ok ... here the calculator i used :

I Always Prefer 1080p
i kindly request you not buy a single SATA Seagate or any other company's HDD for that matter. I have seen many people experience problems using SATA 1/2 drives. So kindly buy IDE HDDs as 80+80+80 GB config. In this manner, u can segregate your data into as many required partitions u want.

I use a 80 GB + 40 GB + 80 GB configuration

the creator of the thread is going the wrong way, unless you tell me the purpose of the pc, i am not going to help you telling good configs for all purposes

from what i know you are probably not going to game on this system
