7800GTX is not worth it, higher power than 7900GTX but performance of 7900GT

Consider 7900GT instead

Best bet Radeon 1900XT for around 30k or 7900GTX for the same cost, but gtx not my prefernce

Well, the first preference while going for a new PC should be a POWERFUL mobo, so that u dont have any trouble upgrading l8r. Since ur budget is good, u can afford to go for a good mobo which will cost arnd 10-12k. Next, invest wisely in a good processor...bcoz gaming isnt the only thing u have a computer for, and without a powerful proc, the computer is lame. I recommend sticking to a midrange card like X850PE(my fav.) rather than going for 7900GT or X1900XTX
Get a good processor, maybe X2 4200+ if u can squeeze up ur budget slightly. Finally, choose the other accesories as per the money left..like monitor, keyboard etc. PSU should be atleast 500W.

7900GT, X2 4200+ is highly overbudget

Also, it's not like the PC will only & always play games, Dual core can be easily baught in 65k budget, infact a combination of Athlon64 3800+ X2 with 7600GT can be easily baught for 65K, although LCD has to be sacrifised

Asus A8N E though for 5.5k is not bad, no need to waste 10k.
What work is the comp for, other than word processing, flash, gaming ,surfing, stick with low Amd 64bit cpus, you won
t get much diff

forget about X850 series

consider only 7900GT, Mystic doesn't know a thing what he is saying, he is just misleading you and spoiling your system.

@ashfame: The prices you mentioned are in US dollars, and as everyone knows, the prices in the US are almost as half as they are in India. It is just because of the greedy distributors here. Inspite of taking the taxes, duty, etc into account, the prices when converted to indian rupees is still much lesser. Just ask any distributor (if you have a close friend) what was the exact price in which that was imported and ask him to tell nothing but the truth. You will go nuts to hear the exact price.

Now for the actual topic. I also think that SLI is useless unless we have a 7800/7900 series and combining any two 7800/7900 is outta his budget. So I have the following config in mind for 65k.

M/b: Asus A8N-E Rs.5650
Processor: 3800+ X2 Rs.16200
Graphics card: 7800GT around Rs.19000
Cabinet: Since he has a budget of around 5k for cabinet and PSU, we can get Antec truepower 450W with a spacious cabinet with at least 2 cooling fans.
HDD: Seagate 300GB SATA Rs.5700
RAM: 1GB Corsair in dual channel Rs.4600
Optical drive: Sony DRU 820A DVD writer Rs.2700
Keyboard and Mouse: Multimedia kb and optical mouse from Logitech Rs.800
Monitor: 17" flat CRT from Samsung/Acer Rs.6400

Total around Rs.66000.

If he gets a PSU which is a little less expensive, then we may accomodate a 7900GT, though I am not sure of the exact current price. Can someone shed some light on this?

first usefull post by digitized......... ;)
All other post must have confused him...in first place is he guy checking this thread....no reply form him abt the views

Config given by digi is quite good ...or i mi8 say the best he can get in odd 65K..... :)
Only change would be PSU with 500W to be safer side with future in mind.....

Prices are not 2 times higher in India than in the US. High end video cards and LCD monitors may cost 50% more, but processors, RAM, hard disks, DVD writers are not more than 25% overpriced here.

7800GT /7900GT is good, but is it required

He should usually go for a 17" monitor, weather LCD or CRT, so, playing over 1024X768 with 85Hz is either not possible or not required, for which a 7600GT with 256 MB RAM is enough, for quite some time

Unless you are a hardcore gamer, a 7900GT is overkill. Better to get a 7600GT or even a X1800GTO which is much more reasonably priced and spend the rest on a good LCD.

@drvarunmehta: Well, I have also posted previously regarding the price situation here. If the prices are not double, then how do you explain the following?

Example of the government and the greediness of the distributors. Taking the exchange rate of $1=Rs.45 as of today, let us find out the prices in the US (lowest price from www.pricewatch.com and also www.newegg.com, which gives the best price among all online stores)

7900GTX 512MB : $ 472 = Rs.21240
7900GT 256MB : $ 286 = Rs.12870
7800GTX 256MB : $ 415 = Rs.18675
7800GT 256MB : $ 299 = Rs.13455
7600GT 256MB : $ 180 = Rs.8100
6800GS 256MB : $ 195 = Rs.8775
6600GT 128MB : $ 124 = Rs.5580

Now see the approximate prices here.

7900GTX 512MB > Rs.40000
7900GT 256MB > Rs.30000
7800GTX 256MB : Rs.29500
7800GT 256MB > Rs.20000
7600GT 256MB : Rs.14500
6800GS 256MB : Rs.13500
6600GT 128MB : Rs.8500

Waiting for clarifications. These are just a few examples. Well, I do not need to explain that most of the prices are near double.

1)Processor : AMD X2 4200+ Dual Core 64Bit CPU ~ Rs 19000
2)MotherBoard : ASUS A8N-E - Rs 5,500
3)Memory : Kingston 2 x 1GB(2GB) DDR-400 RAM - Rs 10,000
4)Graphic Card : XFX GeForce PCI-Expres7600GT 256MB s DDR3 XXX Edition (PV-T73G-UDD7 ) - Rs 15000
4)HardDisk : 250 GB 7200 RPM Seagate SATA 2 Hard Disk - Rs 4,300
5)Monitor : Samsung/ViewSonic Black FLat 17" CRT Monitor - Rs 6,800
6)DVD writer : Lite-On DVD Writer - Rs 2,300
8>Cabinet : Powersafe 450 Watts SMPS - Rs 1,500 + Zebronics Gaming Cabinet with aTemp Display - Rs 2000
9)Keyboard : Logitech Black Multimedia Keyboard - Rs 499
10)Mouse : Logitech Optical Mouse - Rs 300
11)TV Tuner Card : Pinnacle PCTV - Rs 2500

Total - 68K

Only thing I wud like to change in digitized's combo is the GFX card--Get X850PE, its better than 7600GT..and invest the diff. in getting X2 4200+
X2 3800+ isn't the best value for money processor, try for X2 4200+..(IMO the best one is X2 4400+), but thats way out of the budget. This will push the budget to arnd 70k...but its better.

how can X850PE better then 7600GT, it's only 5 to 10% higher in perforamance, but doesn't support SM 3.0 & HDR at all

Athlon64 3800+ is enough, while 4400+ is good but over budget

2. Sony DRU-820A=Benq 1670
All other Previous sony dvd burners are Lite-ON OEM's.

SM3 isnt needed at the moment, nor in the line of the next instalment of games that are out this year. It doesnt make a hell lot of difference.
X850PE
and the performance difference isnt 10%, its more. 7600Gt is a midrange segment card, X850Pe is a high-end card.

The US prices that you quote are prices from online vendors. If you go to buy from a retail outlet in the US, prices will be higher.
The prices you have quoted for India are a bit on the higher side too. India dosen't have online vendors otherwise prices here would be a little lesser.
Further the prices in US are low because high end products sell in bulk over there, but there isn't that much of a demand for them in India, so prices here are on the higher side.
But yes, government taxes do add to the price here keeping these products even further out of our reach.

@ Mystic majority if not all games today use SM3.0 and it makes hell of a difference, you don't need to argue about everything

Corsair value select ram X 2 isn't supported with asus A8N E, I made the same mistake, consider transcend or corsair xms which maybe double the cost

a 7600GT can play games fine at 1024*768, almost all games not all
FEAR shd be fine with soft shadows off, fine at 1024 and maybe fine at 1280*960 softshadows off, not sure of 1280, but these cards don't give a good gaming experience with too high settings

consider no less than 7900GT

spend more on card and less on cpu

conside Radeon 1900XT for arnd 30k if you can afford it

CLARIFICATION
for 17-22k in India you get a 256mb 7900GT, depending upon make, asus for maybe 19.5k approx, take an average of 19-20k for 7900GT,
7900GTX for 29.5k+tax and up, except xfx which is 38 and up, 7800GT for 17k, not worth it, 7800GTX and GT are outdated, not worth it, 7800GTX=7900GT in terms of performance(approximately), 7900GT takes less power
7600GT around 12.5-13k, actually regard it 13(+-100s)k for practical purposes, my frined bought a BIG about a month-two weeks ago for 13300, 6800GS was arnd 11k and 6600gt is around 7.5-8k maybe
