how to connect pc to laptop through lan?

i have a pc with winxp sp2 fitted with a dlink lan card....and a laptop with a lan card..... i have bsnl bband..the lan wire which connects adsl to pc,, i connected it to my laptop instead of adsl...that means i took out one of its end from adsl n put that one in my laptop lan slot.....so i have my pc connected to laptop thru that adsl lan wire...but nothing happens...i want to transfer files from my pc to laptop..watz wrong n what should i do or need more??

dont know the exact answer to ur problem
but u can do as follows


maybe u shud gofor setting up a proxy u can use a cat5 to connect ur laptop to ur pc and then setup proxy so that both of them can have net access and also u can transfer files
