how do you identify whats what

i know this question may sound stupid but this is the first time i am assembling a pc on my own before i had a compac
i have decided on the processor i will either be going for a 3800 with a venice core or for a 3700 with san digeo core now my quetion is how u identify what core it is when u are buying i have not seen amd procc box
also their naming thing is pretty confusing

like suppose i want to go for a amd 64 bit 3800 with a venice core how do u make it out on the box and on the chip is it writen on the box that this has a venice core is it mentiond on the chip like say a marking or something i dont want to be fooled into buying the new castle or wenchister core becuase i am going for 4g b ram
also one of the dealers in mumbai who is trying to sell me a 3700 with asan diego core told me that 3800 with venice core is not come to india is this true and is there a san digeo core in 3800 please help

I strongly suggest you do not assemble your own PC. Get the dealer to assemble and test it for you, the few bucks you pay him will definitely be worth it. Those things are very static sensitive and you can blow them just by touching them with your hands. Let alone which way to insert all the cables and cards and how to put it in the case.

You know the difference between a Venice because it has only 512KB cache while the San Diego has 1 MB. And you cant usually just look at the box and tell what it is. IE you can get a winchester or a Venice CPU. because the boxes and specs are identical... But the power requirements and CPU size itself is not.

The Stepping on the CPU,which is clearly visible by holding the box is all that is needed to identify the core.

i will get a technican to assemble it alein tech but dark loard what do u mean by the steppin on the cpu also whts the power requirement for a wenchister whats it for a venice and regarding the size approxniatly how big or small is the venice from ther wenchister

Better you first see someone assembling the system in fornt of you and then after getting familiar you can go further...Until and unless it is very risky to assemble the system on your own....

There are no such things as stupid questions, only stupid answers.

Other than that, from what I've heard, San Diego is same as Venice but with extra 512K L2C. Winchester is cheaper that Venice with similar performance but Venice overclocks better.

How to identify which core? Look thought the clear plastic window on the packaging and read the OPN on the heat spreader of the CPU.

It's San Diego if the number ends with BN

It's Venice if the number ends with BP OR BW

It's Winchester if the number ends with BI

I have a question for you -
Do any of the current OS's or applications take advantage of 4GB RAM?

AMD Venice 3000+ gets 2700GHZ...

Well, I have always wondered what this Winnie would do if I pulled out the stops and now I know, 2.7GHz, 9x300 1.6 vcore (temps hit 56c Priming!) Ram at 166 divider 2.5-3-3-7 1t 2.85vdimm.

I recently purchased a MSI K8N neo2 Platinum with some old trusted corsair memory and a new venice core 3000+. No matter what I did I couldn't get past 267. At any voltage,any dividers, any amount of tweaking. Even when setting all memory dividers very low I could not achieve a higher overclock. Figuring that I just got a crappy CPU I ordered some OCZ platinum rev2 so that I could at least have tight timings at the speeds I was running. I put my new memory in today and started running memtests, and upping the overclock. I hit 315 1:1 before I hit a memory test error! I could not however pass a prime at this speed. Timings were 315 cas3 4,4,8. I can pass prime and all memory tests at 305 however! This also means what I previously thought was a really crappy CPU is running over 2.8 ghz! I can't believe how picky this board is for RAM! But now running 9x300 at 3,4,3,8 stable with every test I've thrown at it, including several hours of gaming! Woot!

New Memory! Now running at 300 1:1!

ya thanks ok keith the reason i am going for 4 gb ram is because i i am going to use this worstation for apllication like maya , 3d studio max ram and a cpu power is helpfull in redering thats the reason why i going for 4 as min reqirimet is 1 gb in some of the newr edtion also
i have read in a article how to identify if the 3800 has a venice core it said the last two letter would have bp i am not sure about bw as it was not there in the website so are u sure about bw any ways thank for the ur help here is ther link to the page wer i found about the bp thing

BP & BW?? A friend got this info directly from Shuttle (motherboard manufacturer) while emailing tech support in New Zealand. So, I can't guarantee it, but I think it's accurate.

Hmm, 4 gigs sounds cool. Currently MS Flight Sim maxes out at <1 gig so >1.5 gig is quite useless. I'll wait for MSFS 2006 before going 4 gigs.

Taking 2 GB ram is waste of money. Sometimes it performs worse than 2 GB. Put that money in anytrhing else like Gcard or set raid 0 config.

I do some small 3d scenes and objects so I can say that you can easily reach 2GB of mem usage , esp when using radiosity calculations.
But u could've also bought a dual xeon or dual core processor or rage3d and such hardcore 3d hardwares instead.

arvid iif u could elobrate what u are trying to tell yes i have heard the ram problem in amd winchister core but i have heard that it solved with the venice and sandiego core also wth aplication like maya , max u need ram a good quality redring uses mostly ur cpu power and not ur gpu power so ram and ur cpu are important for that maya and max also offer u to network render ie join in more computer (without a high end graphic card ) so insted of staring for 10 hr or more at time for weeks with 2gb u can save some time with 4gb if not a lot . also please explain to me what u meant by the raid set up i am curous

yes sirsub i could have byt the reason i bying an amd with 4 gb ram is because i already have a intel pentium 3 1 ghz connected in a network this will surly take a lot of load and act like a dual core ones that conks off i will buy a amd dual core 3800 x2 this are new dual core cheap and good it will surly be great because unlike the other dual core they are cheap and give performance they are going to be announced on 1 or 2 agust and the price for theen is 345 $ a competion for xenon by the way i am not that sure but can u tell me the cost of a xenon who know if i fell the coast is in my reach i will jump for it dual xenon

Everything I knew about dual-xeons is from a 3d forum where one respected member had dual-xeons. Check these pages for rendering perf of dual vs single cpus.

Since opterons are way too costly, the next best thing would be dual xeons with atleast 2gb ram. Reference: intel xeon, AMD 64 or AMD 64 fx?
I can't get the pricing of these cpus as they are a bit of a niche market in here.

sirsub intel xenon x2 is 900 $ thats around and singl;e zenon is around 600 to 700 dollar calculate it come to to around 30 thosand plus plus u but ram cost u will have to go for a ddr 2 nothing less than 2gb and also a graphic card the cost wiill got o high dual core technolgy will take time to come in the main stream i suugest go to www. cgtalk.com and see what people use in the technical forum pro alos at time use amd 4000 etc with good ram i am thinkingg of going for 3800 with venice core and 4 gb ram i think thats more then enough for normal 3d use hardcore use will work great with dual no dought in that

6. Pentium XE 840. this is P4 CPU, dual core CPU x 1 with hyperthreading. very expensive at $1,000, much better off with regular Pentium D, see below.
7. Dual Xeon 3.2 - priced at $680, this is single core Xeon x 2.
8. Pentium D 840, priced at about $400. this is a dual core P4 x 1. I believe this is the new value leader. this CPU also takes regular P4 MB, 955/945 chipset MB.
9. OPteron 152, priced at $650. single core Opteron x 1
