at what cost

If u send a message from a website or a messenger does the receiver
get charged for that sms reception?...surely it cant be free..guys somewhere they willmake profits...guys check it out.
yahoo messenger requires the receiver to reply the first time u message him for him to continue receiving messages from your messenger.....
Is there any catch in that
Messages sent from some websites dont get delivered at all
I havent had any problems as such with yahoo messenger
