It seems your motherboard supports only up to 1GB RAM per slot.
Intel® Desktop Board D101GGC — System memory

The price of DDR800 is about 2k for 1GB, although this will vary somewhat depending on where you buy it.

you mean DDR2 800mhz??? I don't think DDR has 800mhz RAM. It's the frequency of your RAM. 1GB Ram per Slot i am not sure but i think in each slot the max capacity you put is 1GB

follow this link Intel® Desktop Board D101GGC — Technical product specification and have a look at this one D101GGC Technical Product Specification [PDF] your board support DDR1 (type of RAM module) 400mhz and 333mhz its better to change motherboard itself to get change from high cost low bandwidth module look for Gigabyte G41 Combo though it is Micro-ATx but it support both DDR2 and DDR3 so for an entry-level board it's quite a good thing.
here the specs GA-G41M-Combo (rev. 1.3) - GIGABYTE

Yeah better change the mobo if possible. DDR RAM is expensive, more than DDR3, better get a mobo & DDR3 RAM. Although that would cost more than just DDR RAM, still it would be worth it.
