Hi

Thanks for your reply. Is the Asus brand reliable? I dont know anyone myself who has one so did not check out anything in Asus\Samsung\Acer. Friend of mine gave bad reviews about his HP that it overheats so finally had to narrow down to lenovo or dell.:-?

Posting Again since my prev reply did not appear.
Hi
Thanks for your reply. I dont know of anyone who used a Asus brand laptop before hence I did not even look at Asus\Samsung\Acer.
What is the general reliability of Asus laptops? I am particularly worried about the board problems and problems with overheating etc. As you can see I am not that into games etc but would rather prefer something that would work with the rest of the stuff for a few(hope 3-4 is not asking for too much ) years.

Asus is a very good brand too. It runs much cooler than most others. HP is known to heat up. So, no surprise in it. Get Asus eyes closed.
And currently Asus provides the most VFM compared to others.

Hi

Thanks for your replies.
Do you think it is worth paying a little more for this ?:

Asus laptops are pretty good, and the one which I have suggested is of P series basically it is the business series so it has got a very good build quality and is a very rugged laptop.
And it has got a anti glare screen(mat finish) and also Asus are providing onsite warranty.
Dell is good but now we have better options in other brands.
Lenovo and HP are not recommended, atleast by me.

I know about HP. But why lenovo? It even has very good build quality.
OP,

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the replies.

@rajpat - even i am confused :-? Initially i was confused choosing between a laptop and desktop. Now between the different brands and models

@aroraanant - thanks for your reply. assuming i go with Asus which is better?

ASUS X53SC-SX536D/2nd Gen Ci5/4 GB/750 GB/1GB graphics/DOS: Flipkart.com: Compare, Review Asus Notebook

OR

Asus P53E-S0101D

In general I would rather have a less powerful one which lasts longer than something which is a very good config but has more issues. But, of course, if both are the same I would go for the one with a better config paying a bit more.

@saswat23- thanks for the reply too.

I did not know much about Asus until i posted here and before that Acer and Asus were of the same quality since both were unknown brands to me. (Yes!! i was that ignorant :|)

now looking at the good feedback on Asus I am thinking again between Dell, Lenovo and Asus.

Asus is the best when it comes to great configurations at low price. Remember they can offer products at lower prices because they are original motherboard and graphics card manufacturers (No. 1 at that too). I use an asus laptop and had no complaints. May be their screen is not too good same for web cam. But other than this they are top class.

My suggestion is to get one with windows 7 bundled. You have to pay 3000 more. But it is worth it. Skip this if u plan to use ubuntu. Go for Asus................

Now thats the trick only. stay away from the well known brands like HP and Dell if you want a reliable machine. both have serious heating issues and are not at all reliable. 3-4 of my friends having dell are facing serious problems including me. mine was their premium range XPS series which is completely dead in just 3yrs:-x. Now you just cant expect a premium product of well known company to die in few yrs only.
So go for the lesser known brands only. Asus/Acer/Lenovo,etc are lesser known in India only but well known worldwide plus they are a lot less in price.

Now using Acer timelinex 5830tg for around 8 months and completely satisfied with it:doublethumb: . it never runs hot even on heavy gaming, no heating issues, looks cool(business standard).
And yea its got very strong battery backup(claimed 8hrs but 6hrs practical). sometimes i got around 7hrs when it was new. theres a downside also as the battery is not removable but that in no way bother me.

dont know about the Asus but i can tell you about Acer as i am having it. Acer takes just 3k for 2yrs extended warranty(1+2=3yrs) compared to dell/hp which charge a whopping 8-10k.

Asus charge around 5k for 1+2yrs extended onsite warranty, very brands give onsite warranty. Its service is also good.
I know dell is good but now we have got better options so not considering that.

Older laptops faced lots of heating issues because 1st generation Core i processors ran very hot. There are no heating issues in newer generations of those laptops. I have a HP dv6 6165tx and my room-mate has a XPS both with i7 2670QM and both don't heat up except when gaming.
Acer Timeline that you have mentioned runs cool because it has a Core i3 which makes much lesser heat as compared to i7.
And HP's extended warranty costs Rs.4500 if you buy it within 3 months of buying the laptop, and they were also running a promotion a few days back giving extend warranty for 1.1k.

Hi Guys

Was looking to order the
ASUS X53SC-SX536D/2nd Gen Ci5/4 GB/750 GB/1GB graphics/DOS: Flipkart.com: Compare, Review Asus Notebook

and now flipkart says it is permanently discontinued.

Why does that happen usually? Anyone knows?
The only replacement available is
Asus X53SC-SX492D / Core i5 / 2 GB / 750 GB / Free DOS: Flipkart.com: Compare, Review Asus Notebook

which has a 2GB RAM.

And the P series is also out of stock, now I am waiting till one of them becomes available again but wanted to check with you guys why the model says permanently discontinued.

There only a difference of RAM, which you can upgrade yourself just 600-700 bucks....
So it doesn't matter I think.
And I hope u can get it in local market, just give a try

if you are gonna buy from cochin, you should call Online IT solution, Focuz, Oxygen and tell them about the prices other shops told you, i recently helped my friends buy two laptop. one was from online it and other from Oxygen... got the cheapest offer from online it (30k for i3,gpu model) and some goodies too...

They both gave me good offers.

I would recommend samsung, asus is also good!

Samsung has an i5 model with gpi for 35k and asus too, u should consider those. wont recommend lenovo or dell at this price range!
